Relocating to York school advice 🙏

Morning all,

Hoping someone can help, my family are thinking of relocating to York and have a year 8 child so would have to make an in year application outside of a normal intake of year 7. We are looking at state schools and wondering if anyone has experience of making his kind of move and if there are usually any spaces in the secondary schools.

Thanks in advance for any advice 😊

Whereabouts in York are you relocating to?

Tomrrowandtomorrowandtommorrow · 25/12/2025 23:05

The birth rate is in decline so not all schools will be over subscribed at the moment. You won't know until you call them and check though. We see a lot of mid-year admissions it seems.

Thank you both for replies, not sure what area of york, it would be dictated a bit by schools that might have spaces, and i need to take a good look at flood risk areas too. Any advice in either area very gratefully recieved.
Where we are now there is just so much pressure on school places its so hard to get anything in area if you move after offers day 😩. ..Its good to hear not all areas have this problem

I don't know of any York schools that have trouble with flooding. I'm happy to give you more advice when you have an idea of your options!

I live in Huntington but no kids. Huntington and JoRo schools both close. I live where it is claimed to be a high flood risk area but since they sorted the Foss Barrier, no issues at all. Kids here almost commute to All Saints. No idea re in year places but suspect most have them. No really bad secondary schools here at all. Friends are happy with Millthorpe and Fulford as well as my closest two.

Thank you for the tips, and reassuring to hear there has been work done to help with flooding. We are visiting in the new year and I'm sure I'll be back on thread with a few more questions.

Flooding only affects a tiny part of the city (although not good for them obviously), along the Ouse itself now.
I don't know about in year places, but my DD is at one of the top rate schools and there are people that have joined their year every year she's been there.
Like @Sharpkat says there aren't any bad schools, and a number of really good schools. We're very lucky with the provision.

Thank you @Suntree32 that's really useful information, I'm looking forward to visiting so much, it seems like such a lovely area.

Avoid York high school, absolute shit hole

Mumofteenandtween · 03/01/2026 22:13

My son is in Year 8 of one of (probably) the top 3 most popular / over subscribed schools in York. There is definitely space in his form as two kids moved abroad mid December and haven’t yet been replaced.

You can’t really go wrong with York secondary schools, they are for the most part excellent.

Flooding can be an issue in the city centre and you’ve probably seen pics of the kings head pub underwater. However, the pavements around the rest of the city would have been dry!

I have children at archbishop holgates which is excellent but you can’t go wrong really - Huntington, Fulford and All Saints are all outstanding too.

York seems to have a rapidly shrinking number of young people and many of the primary schools seem to be losing classes. However this doesn’t necessarily equate to places at secondary obviously. Could you go and visit some and discuss things with them? Huntington especially seem happy to show you round- I remember at the open evening the headteacher said he would be delighted to welcome anyone on a wet Tuesday afternoon in November to get a real feel for the place! The others may do too.
Good luck with it all - you really are spoiled for choice here and it’s a great place to raise kids.

We moved to York a few years back and found our choices were pretty limited. We were lucky to get a place in a good state secondary, I know others haven’t had it so easy
