Grey M&S School Shirts

It appears that M&S are now only doing the grey shirts in “girls”. But when I messaged them they have said they are unisex/fine for boys!

Not sure wether to go for them or not as we’ve always had M&S ones.

Maybe slightly slimmer? More tailored maybe? I bought unisex school joggers and they are defo slimmer in the lower leg than regular boys joggers. Ok for my girls but my average boy and even slim boy they were too thin in the legs (looked like leggins on them 🤣) so much so I’ve had to buy boy joggers for the youngest (from m and s).

What about John Lewis do they do them? I bought my last school shirts banner on Amazon cheaper than the “school supplier” and same make.

Thanks that’s good to know and will have a look at John Lewis!

But shirt buttons do up the opposite way for boys and girls? That would be very confusing.

SarahJ87 · 24/12/2025 16:20

They said it was the same!

When polo shirts were introduced into primary schools they all buttoned on the boys side. It was only when manufacturers decided to take more money by producing polo shirts with a scalloped edge and labelling them for girls that there was any distinction. As the M&S grey school shirts are a bit niche these days,I suspect they are selling them in fewer and fewer quantities and right now more girls version are being sold than the boys. The chances are the shirts will be worn with a tie so I get why M&S consider that boys could wear the girl version. Who is going to see which way the shirt is buttoned once it is fastened and tie in place?

True, so you think they would be fine/ nobody would notice? I suppose we can order them and see if he’s happy with them. If not can return assume they won’t be in gendered packaging.

The M&S shirts I bought recently were in gendered packaging. I would check the buttons and I would not dress a boy in buttons the other way as children will notice and comment on it.

The girls shirts in older ags are usually more tailored in the chest area while the boys are squarer.
