Ds1s history teacher said this......or you could say The Arabs just took up where the Germans left off...

in relation to Israel palestine conflict.
I am pretty about it...
to point of actually mentioning it to school. Facts being facts and all?

That's a political statement, not history. I would mention it to the school, tbh - rather casts a doubt on the objectivity and competence of the teacher.

Well I'd disgree with her, I think the Isrealis transfereed the persecution to the Palestinians.

BUT if I were a history teacher, I would refrain from saying so.

I might mention it to the school if i were you, but I feel passionately about this conflict.

Habbibu · 09/06/2008 19:48

Don't you think, Cod? Maybe not a formal complain, but it's pretty shitty history for a start, and a pretty overt political statement. A quiet word with the head?

I guess, but this is maybe a battle worth choosing - if there was ever a time when people needed to be properly informed about Middle Eastern affairs, it's now.

Maybe mention it at parents evening, rather than making a formal complaint?

I'd still complain tbh, but it's an imporatnt battle to me, unfortunately to most poele it's not.

BTW it's not a pun cod, it's a cliche.

Habbibu · 09/06/2008 19:52

Ah, no, Cod - that's not a "mistake" - not an incorrect date, but a fairly dodgy and ill-informed interpretation. I suppose I am a bit precious about history - kind of my area (and DH's).

And for your information, Cod, I live in Scotland. We worship the sun coming out!

I bet it's not a 'mistake' and is a line the teacher has used before and will use again as it reflects thier belief.

Habbibu · 09/06/2008 19:53

I'm with you on the over-complaining - v. sick of students in HE whinging about not being spoon fed, but think a quiet word here might nip this in the bud.

Hope not, Cod - most of our household income is dependent on the early middle ages having happened...

I agree with Cod about choosing your battles. If he is in secondary - how old is he? Old enough for you talk about it with him, and get him books etc to give him alternative views. And to explain that even teacher are human and bring baggage to this conflict which has endless nuances and no one right answer. There is a very good book called 'From Beirut to Jerusalem' (sorry can't remember author) which puts into contexts the various factions from 1945 - 1990.
It would be good if you could also get him reading current quality newspapers to get a better feel for the current reality and to get to see that there are numerous shades of grey, and gettin him to form his own opinions. For example, this weekend there were several reports about the Israel/Iran oil company - nows there's an intersting combination of interests!

Are you sure it wasn't a deliberately provocative statement designed to kick off a rational discussion in class? That would make much more sense. If it was a stand-alone statement, I don't think it's worth a formal complaint but it is worth talking to the teacher about. If there isn't a parents' evening soon, maybe an after-school phone call?

I did this recently when DS2's teacher told the class that of the Greens got into power electricity would be rationed to 2 or 3 hours a day (). I rang and said actually that's not true, I thought it was important that the children had as much factually accurate information as possible so they could make informed decisions about politics etc etc - I doubt I made myself popular, but I can live with that.
