Trafford grammas

My son has passed the entrance exams for all Trafford grammar schools — not with flying colours, but he did really well. He absolutely loves maths, science, and computing.

The obvious choice would be Altrincham Grammar School for Boys, as it’s the closest to us. He wants to go there, and some of his friends will be joining too. Still, I’m not entirely convinced. It’s a very competitive environment, and I’m not sure that’s what would suit him best.

We’ve visited all the schools, and my personal favourite was Urmston Grammar — it just had a lovely atmosphere, though it’s the furthest from us. Stretford Grammar also seemed caring and supportive. I wasn’t quite as taken with Sale Grammar; the maths department in particular didn’t seem very enthusiastic.

Of course, you only get a small glimpse on open days, so it’s hard to tell what a school is really like.
Would love to hear your thoughts or experiences.

Stretford is a lovely, nurturing school. Lots of emphasis placed on well-being alongside academia. My eldest achieved excellent results there and was very happy and I have two children who currently attend.

Given that they’re all grammar schools, I’d go for the one that’s the easiest for him to get to!

If Altrincham is your closest I wouldn't even consider Urmston due to the journey! Sale and Stretford are more accessible if you live close to the tram.

I’d go to closest. Better for mates etc. Important for teens

I agree that closest definitely has its advantages. They are all excellent schools.

Hi there ,I’m trying to get some insight into this year’s results and admission trends. I know no one can predict the overall outcome, but I’d really appreciate hearing about how things are looking in your DCs’ tuition centres or schools.
My DC scored above 370 for Urmston and Stratford, and above 365 for Sale and AGSB. Since we’re out of catchment, I understand that higher scores are usually needed—especially to be within the top 20 for Stratford and Urmston. I’m a bit concerned about how competitive it might be this year.
From what I’ve seen, last year’s data suggests there’s a reasonable chance with Sale, since they consider total marks. But I’d be very grateful if anyone could share any recent insights or patterns they’ve noticed regarding cut-offs or offers.
Thank you in advance for your help and best of luck to all the DCs!

I second this, my daughter was very well looked after there!
The children come from far and wide, they seemed to put them with children from a similar postcode for yr 7 so they had someone to get the tram with. However, a quick commute is always worth considering...

I have DC that went to AGSB & SGS. Both are excellent and provide a well rounded education. My personal preference would be Sale because it’s co-ed. I definitely wouldn’t consider Urmston unless you live there. It’s a nightmare transport wise. Given it’s a choice of great or great, I’d let him choose.
