Kids staying in uniform after school

When I was a teenager, I'd get changed as soon as I got home from school same as most people. My 2 DS are in years 9 and 11 and stay in their uniform the vast majority of time after school, seeing no point getting changed. Is this commonplace? I don't get it 😁

Pretty sure I kept my uniform on after school in primary and secondary school.

dontforgetme · 19/10/2025 22:58

I stayed in my uniform and so do my kids.

NameChangeForThisQuestionOnly · 19/10/2025 23:00

I also used to change out of my school uniform when I got home because, well, it was a uniform! It was very formal to wear - dress (or shirt and skirt), tie, blazer. I changed from uniform into my regular clothes.
Maybe because school uniforms look a bit more casual these days perhaps kids just think of them as regular clothes.

seven201 · 19/10/2025 23:00

I definitely couldn’t be bothered to get changed and my dc don’t get changed either.

dontcomeatme · 19/10/2025 23:00

I used to run home and either get changed to go out with friends or put pjays on. Uniforms are so uncomfortable.

Runningismyhappyplace50 · 19/10/2025 23:00

I got changed but my DC do not! Used to bother me especially when they keep their blazer on but works for them.

MustTryHarderAndHarder · 19/10/2025 23:01

I always got changed as I only had one skirt as they were very expensive so didn't want it to get dirty.

blankcanvas3 · 19/10/2025 23:01

I got changed but DS doesn’t unless he has something planned

Enko · 19/10/2025 23:01

This comes up regularly on MN its about 50/50 as to who stays in uniform and who changes. Mine stuck to uniform until GCSE level where they started to change.

Dh says he stayed in trousers and shirt. I didnt have a uniform.

Denim4ever · 19/10/2025 23:05

DC always changed after school. Uniform trousers are like wearing suit trousers and collared shirts - even polo shirts - aren't normal kids wear. Additionally, who wants pasta sauce etc. on uniform items just in case it stains.

EndlessDistraction · 19/10/2025 23:11

Mine stayed in uniform unless they were going out again, though ties came off.

This is the same as my daughter, the skirts are £60 each so she only has one, so I ask her to change straight out of it after school!

oviraptor21 · 19/10/2025 23:17

Never bothered changing after school and neither did my kids. Can't remember them being messy or the clothes being uncomfortable. Uniform is easy to clean anyway.
But certainly didn't want double the laundry.

MilesManchester · 19/10/2025 23:20

Our two DS always remove their school sweatshirts and put on hoodies over their shirts. Surely their ties should be off? 😁

change every day change into more comfy clothes aswell as keeping uniform clean

Jollyjoy · 19/10/2025 23:24

I just let them choose, sometimes they change, sometimes not. The uniforms are usually filthy after a day at school so no need here to worry about keeping them clean at home! I’d be comfier but I don’t think I changed as a kid either

UneFoisAuChalet · 19/10/2025 23:26

My three either change into their pjs - mix of T-shirts, hoodies and lounge trousers or into clothes if they’re going out. We usually know what their plans are for the evening based on what they’re wearing. They never ever stay/ed in their uniforms.

hardtocare · 19/10/2025 23:44

my teen barely leaves her room after school so stays in uniform. I used to be out and about more so would change. Maybe it’s change in teen behaviour?

Tiredofwhataboutery · 19/10/2025 23:48

My kids stay in uniform but they have five sets and none of it is uncomfy / fancy. I think kids used to have less clothes or stuff needed pressing etc.

CrushingOnRubies · 19/10/2025 23:49

My primary school uniform stayed on. Until the one time I went to a social club and got acrylic paint down it. Mum was fuming

secondary always got changed it was really uncomfortable. And tricky to wash so didn’t want to spill tea down it

TheRosesAreInBloom · 20/10/2025 18:03

Haven’t read the whole thread but I prefer my 7 year old to stay in her uniform as it’s just one outfit for the laundry, as opposed to what would certainly be two!

Ifeeltheneedtheneedforcoffee · 20/10/2025 18:07

I always changed out of uniform and still change out of "work" clothes now
The dc change- often due to clubs etc but it seems uncomfortable to be in blazer and ties.
We do have to discuss if its always appropriate to change from uniform into pjs at 4pm but that feels like a whole other mumsnet thread!

Tessabelle74 · 20/10/2025 18:07

My kids remove ties and blazers but otherwise stay in the uniform until they get ready for bed, why dirty up more clothes?

Ireadnovelsbyfrenchauthorswithloosemorals · 20/10/2025 18:11

I can't remember - does it matter?

HarlequinHare · 20/10/2025 18:14

I never changed out of secondary uniform but it was a very lax uniform - no tie or blazer - and I was a very scruffy child - long shapeless skirt, long shapeless cardigan. We didn't have a primary school uniform.
I strongly encourage DS1 to change because he's in sixth form and his suits are stupid expensive but he doesn't immediately. DS 2 almost always does some kind of exercise after school so is more likely to be in PE kit
They never got changed out of primary school uniform
