Do grammar school kids get more homework compared to a mixed ability non grammar or is it the same?

I have one child in each. I would say the grammar gives more homework. That’s only one example of each school type though. It might not be the case for all.

HereComesDecember · 10/10/2025 20:45

I have one in each and the grammar school give a lot more.

TeenToTwenties · 10/10/2025 21:10

Even within a school not all things are equal.
At my DD's comp she got less homework in third quartile sets than friend's DD in top sets.

MagicLoop · 10/10/2025 21:42

Impossible to say. It will vary from school to school. I work in a grammar school and have also worked in independent schools and comprehensive schools. Homework amount has varied across the board. Some comprehensives I've worked in have given as much homework as the grammar and the independents. One independent gave less.

Travelmad777 · 10/10/2025 22:12

It all depends. In our area there are a couple of comprehensive that seem to give more homework than the grammars, but others who give less.

PopPopMusic · 10/10/2025 23:20

My kids in two different grammars get far less homework than their friends in comps. I guess it depends on the individual schools though.

OrchardDoor · 10/10/2025 23:23

It varies. Best to try and find out from parents at your local schools or ask the schools.

MaudlinGazebo · 10/10/2025 23:32

DS is super selective grammar gets hardly any homework compared to his friends in comps. The grammar do advertise a lot of homework but it doesn’t seem to have materialised.

KnottyKnitting · 10/10/2025 23:37

My DD went to a grammar school and she got considerably less homework than her friends from primary who went to the local high school.

PrivateMusic · 10/10/2025 23:42

My dd is at a grammar and doesn’t get that much homework. They also have a no homework over school holidays policy.

MarketSt · 11/10/2025 05:43

DD is Y8 at a grammar.

The homwork timetable says it’s 90 minutes (3 subject x 30 min) per night. Plus maths. Which I think is pretty excessive for that age.

And whilst every subject sets homework it never takes her that. Many subjects she’s done in 5-10. Only
takes her that long if she gets engrossed and goes OTT (as generally happens with something creative (Spent 2 hours designing her own ghost last weekend. Love that little nerd.)

My children are in different super selective grammars and they don’t have much homework at all

But you do understand that the mixed abilities schools have sets for maths, science , English and other... And in Top sets kids children are very able.

That is not a lot. Y8,Catholic school in top 100 state schools in the UK- top sets, only Math on Sparx maths takes around 2 hours per week, then there is science which is around the same, then there is English, History, RE and occassionally other homework

Dredsen · 12/10/2025 16:30

You cant compare.
Too unpredictable.
Mine is now y9.
Y7 mostly busy work like covering book or revising
Y8 more busywork and revision some lang spelling tests every other week. 6x a year for other subjects like d&t.
y9 maybe a little more homework.
Overall less than 30mon a day easily for fast child. Mine is not fast and some things like the history we just had took 2hrs...

Sparx maths does take hours but actually hould be maybe 30min a week w hich is very very little.
but for tests could then be spending hours revising.
with the issue being they dont understand the work as havent done any homework questions...

As a child at a provate school we used to get maths several times a week. Lang spelling every week. Verb tests. And proper year end exams which made it less stressful during the year.

i dont feel dc secondary get the best out of students with lots of mini tests. And they are not having to learn multiple topics except maths.
It also makes reports quite odd as you get a report months later but they cant generally really change the results of the next report...
