In my town there are 3 secondary schools that are in close proximity to each other. They draw pupils from roughly the same area; the pupils come from a similar demographic; similar socio- economic background etc but one school achieves significantly better GCSE and alevel results than the other two, and has done so for years.

What is causing this? Is it down to the headteacher? I can understand a difference if the pupils from one school came from a better economic background or there were large demographic differences but there aren't...

is it down to the headteacher? Today's article in the DailyMail as made me think how schools from the same area with similar pupils can differ so much.

'Headmaster from hell' turns troubled school around

Alun Ebenezer, 50, was dubbed the 'headmaster from hell' by parents after he sent 50 children home in one day over uniform violations such as wearing the wrong socks and the lengths of girls' skirts.

There could be lots of reasons such as...

More skillful teachers
A headteacher who sets the overall approach of the school
More resource
Different policies on specific things like bullying or disruption etc.
Better facilities
Differing budget
