SEND assistant. Need for resilience?

Applying for this job tomorrow and they've said "you need to be resilient". It's actually the only character requirement. Can anyone explain why? I imagine some parents could get angsty in meetings but surely a SEND assistant wouldn't be having meetings privately with parents. Note: is not a SEND TA role, but an assistant to the SENDCo in a Secondary.

Can anyone shed some more light on this?

What's the job description? I imagine challenging interactions are likely to be a fair part of the role - there are generally too many of those for the SENDCo to take them all while their assistant has a cushy paperwork-only number...

Because there's no budget for you to the job well, so you'll constantly be fire fighting and be under fire from all sides for underperforming when it's out of your control.

Because you’ll have a lot of angry and frustrated parents to deal with I imagine.

@napodyjobdescription is: We are looking to appoint a team player who is an organised and resilient individual to become High School’s SEND Team Admin Assistant. You will support the Director of Wellbeing and Inclusion: SENDCo and Assistant SENDCo with administration tasks including form completions, Annual Review and EHCP paperwork, updating trackers, calendar organisation, filing and liaising with external professionals and school staff. Experience and confidence with Google is essential; Google Sheets and Google Docs are used on a daily basis. Exceptional English writing and speaking skills are essential.

So it's advertised as an admin role. What are these tasks which require resilience specifically? Dealing with the kids themselves, authorities, parents? As an admin assistant, that seems surprising but maybe.... That's why I'm asking.

Because it's a bloody awful, stressful and emotional job I imagine. Parents begging for support, children in distress and being told 'no can do, sorry'.

napody · 10/09/2025 21:46

Ah, your OP didn't include the word admin. I agree that's less clear, then. It may be connected to the absolutely insane workload around SEND and people getting ratty it wasn't done yesterday! I agree if it says admin assistant you're unlikely to be dealing with much actual decision making that may come with angry repercussions. But you may still be in some challenging situations, even just answering the phone to irate people! And the SENDCo themselves may understandably be very stressed at times?

PrincessOfPreschool · 10/09/2025 21:46

That makes sense, noblegiraffe. Prob not for me 😞

painful, as you will see children and families in distress all the time, while having your hands tied and be totally unable to help.
children who clearly have issues who through no fault of their own will not be able to jump through the hoops to access the help they really need.
cold hearted as they leave school without the help the need and you need to turn that tie off cold turkey and get ready for a new batch of kids and families who need your help.
