2025 GCSE results

Does anyone know when the gov.uk school performance site will be updated with this year’s GCSE results? (Applying for secondary school and at an open evening yesterday the headteacher talked about their results being better than the borough average - but I suspect that average is pretty dismal.)

Also, am I right in thinking that progress 8 is no longer a thing, and if so what’s the best way to compare different schools?

Thanks in advance :-)

DfE review grade and reporting data in Autumn and usually publish around Christmas. Reviews of marking/appeals etc are still taking place. Centres then have the opportunity to review the DfE data and measurable objectives before they are all formally published

Thanks, that’s helpful to know - a shame it’s not before the application deadline but I can imagine that must take ages to sort out.

look at last years, they don't normally change that much.

No progress 8 this yr

Yes because they include the T level, V Cert etc as well as GCSE. That's 100s of 1000s of results and data to check and corroborate

Theres no Progress scores for next few years as there were no SATs in 2020&2021.

I suppose the best comparison will be looking at historic data in comparison to see how the school conpares to previous years and looking at how the school compares to local and national averages.

Normally they published before the secondary school submission deadline.Last year the government brought them back in house and one of the exam boards had a problem with their stats so they were delayed to after the submission date. No date published for this year, maybe they don’t want to be late in 2 successive years.

No progres 8. Think you will get attainment around November, often after admissions deadline. Was late last year. I would go on last years and previous years (obviously bearing COVID in mind)

You’re best off looking at trends/ consistency. Schools can have an amazing year, but is a one off…

Some schools publish their own data on their websites so you could compile it from that, but some do seem to pick and choose what they publish. I checked a couple of our local secondaries and their 2025 data was on the site already. They had things like % getting 4+ in 5 GCSE's inc Eng & Maths, % of grades 7-9, attainments figures and like others have said no progress scores.

I remember being very surprised just how much the secondary school we chose for DS went up and down in the league tables year on year. The percentage of kids with five GCSE passes seemed to go up and down every alternate year by anywhere between 5 - 8 percentage points.

Even after sending him there for five years, I'm still none the wiser how it managed to vary so much from year to year.
