Any maths teachers/tutors about?

Hi,

My DD is currently in one of the top maths sets at her school but only just. Her maths teacher last year said that her y7 exam result could have been better and she would benefit from extra work if she wants to stay in the top set.

She is very keen on a maths tutor to make sure she keeps up but DH has a maths degree and is happy to help her (which she wouldn’t mind). He just isn’t sure which resources to use.

The school used sparx maths for homework and they have been doing some of the extension activities on there.

Does anyone know of any other resources/websites which would be useful for year 8 extension work?

Thanks,

Hi EdenGlen,

Thats fab. What sort of school does your DD go to? Do share some details or drop a DM and I will advise the Y8 resources.

Tc

Hi,

Thanks for the reply!

It’s a large state secondary school. 12 forms per year.

This is the topic information for year 8 from the school website.

I am not a Maths teacher but I do know of one.
Moving down a set often works much better for a child, it worked wonders for my dd. In the second set the pace was better, she got more examples given and she just grew in confidence and flew.
She got the top grade at GCSE and then at A Level also.

As parents we need to take a step back sometimes.

If DH has a maths degree you probably don't need a tutor, just something structured for her to actually work through. Few things that helped our DS in the same spot:

  • Dr Frost Maths — free, huge question bank, very good for top-set extension
  • Corbettmaths — short videos + worksheets, great for filling specific gaps
  • UKMT Junior Challenge past papers if she likes a stretch (Sparx doesn't really do this)

We've also been using mathstutor.me for short daily practice. Main reason it's stuck is it's short enough that DS actually does it rather than arguing about it.
Also @beelegal's point about moving set is a fair one to keep in your back pocket — at Y8 confidence usually matters more than the set label.
