6th form colleges South West London

Just wondered where everyone’s kids went to Sixth form in South West London? Seem to be very few Sixth form colleges that offer A levels in maths and physics. Any suggestions? There are grammars in Sutton that he can get to but I’d like a few normal schools/colleges as a back up.,

Esher college is the most well known one.

Graveney?

OldYorkMum · 31/08/2025 00:53

Esher College, but you will need to be quick as applications for 2026 close at midday on 30th September. And if you are not in the Guaranteed category, it’s a ballot.

Greenshaw in Sutton as a slightly lower grade required than grammars but still good results. There are very few colleges that seem to offer a levels. The people I know who go to college for a levels seem to travel out to Reigate.

Do you specifically want a college or would you look at schools with a 6th form? Waldegrave, grey court, Orleans all have 6th forms that you can apply too

Thank you for the heads up @OldYorkMum. I’ll take a look!

It could be anything but I’m finding Google not the best tool for searching. I have never heard of any of these. Will take a look. Thanks.

Graveney?

Graveney is close but I don’t think he is keen.

Absolutely, right about the admissions process for Esher, but I was surprised this year how they might be struggling to recruit! My dc applied this time last year didn’t get passed the ballot, wasn’t on the reserve list and just after results day was offered a place for A levels this September. My dc isn’t interested as it happens but I wonder how many others also got late offers? Makes me wonder if they’re losing out to all the local sixth forms now…

@timetofight what does he dislike about it?

Use this site to find 6 forms/colleges by borough and then see which ones are logistically feasible.

There are loads tbh

These are in Richmond borough and have teeny catchments/take on v few students as new sixth formers in practice so not worth looking at unless you are planning to relocate, which would be bonkers during GCSE year.

OldYorkMum · 31/08/2025 17:50

Where are you roughly? Transport is a consideration. Esher fine if driving themselves or can get to Thames Ditton station. By bus can be awkward depending on direction of approach.

BlackberrySky · 31/08/2025 17:54

It would be helpful to know where in SW London you are. Nearly all the schools in Wandsworth, Merton, Sutton and Kingston have sixth forms that offer A levels.

@timetofight You would need to live very close to these schools to have a chance of a place as they prioritise by distance and only have a small number of external places. Colleges have much larger intakes. Where do you live, and are you intending to move? Also, are your DC's predicted grades high enough for selective schools (the more 9's the better)?

Dangermouse999 · 02/09/2025 20:15

Look at Kings College London Maths School near Waterloo station.

It’s possibly the highest achieving 6th form in the country. Over 90% of A level grades are A* or A and over 40% of students go to Oxbridge.

There’s no catchment area (some students come from 1.5-2 hours away) but acceptance is by entrance test and interview.

It won’t suit all students but its grades are incredible for a state school.
