GCSE English Lit and Language review of marking

SomersetBrie · 26/08/2025 16:11

There is lots of chat about review of marking on the GCSEs threads but I am interested specifically in anyone who is reviewing English (Lang or Lit) and whether the review provides an increase in grade.
DS, predicted a 7, got a 6 in both. He is not very close to the grade boundary (4 marks away) but the difference in marks between Paper 1 and Paper 2 have encouraged me to request access to the papers and see if it's worth a review.

Is anyone else asking for a review? I am curious to know how many marks people go up/down and if it results in a change of grade for many people.
(DS does not need a 7 but he was expecting a 7 out of 1 or other at least.)
This is AQA.

What have you decided @TheyNotLikeUs?

Part of me (irrationally) feels like they will have awarded their quota of changed marks already so it will be even tougher at review. I know this shouldn’t in reality be the case.

There is no quota

TheyNotLikeUs · 19/09/2025 19:37

If there is a grade change does it take longer for that to be communicated than if there isn't a grade change i.e. is there another hoop to jump through @MrsHamlet ?

We're waiting on the only one paper we sent for review. We decided not to do any others @Examinetheexams .

Someone posted something helpful about it being a lesson in accepting imperfection.

MrsHamlet · 19/09/2025 19:57

@TheyNotLikeUs no idea, I'm afraid Reviewers don't know the final outcome.

My daughter’s language review has gone up 13 marks so she now has a 9. How can they miss by 13 marks!?

That is quite shocking - could you tell from looking at the original paper? Did they just miss off one question for example?

Slimtoddy · 21/09/2025 12:47

Ds's teacher has agreed to look at papers (took ages to get the script) but I would be very nervous of doing a review even if teacher recommends it. You may have seen my previous posts where I tell the story of my eldest losing 27 marks in a review for A levels a few years ago. He kept the original grade but was one mark off the lower grade.

What additional checks would you do on top of teacher's view to reassure someone as nervous as me. I was thinking of using AI?

I don't think teacher will suggest seeking a review but that's just a gut feeling. If they do I will get nervous.

MrsHamlet · 21/09/2025 12:56

Using AI to do what? It doesn't have access to the mark scheme so it's not going to help you with this.

If you don't trust the teacher, then there's no point in wasting their time.

DS went up 8 which I thought was crazy but 13 is worse!!!!
Ds was only 1 off the grade above, if he had needed 8 we probbaly wouldn't have remarked

We’ve just put an English Lit paper 1 in for review. DD got a low grade 3 in Paper 1 and a high 6 in paper 2. Her teacher said Paper 1 was marked very harshly. She needs 10 marks to move up a grade, so quite unlikely, but not impossible given the situation.

That is like our English Lang. A 3 in paper 1 and 6 in paper 2.

Not heard back from school or teachers...

Absolutely this.

Nothing more frustrating for a teacher than to have their time wasted.

I had this once. I gave my feedback after spending a fair amount of time looking through all their papers at their request, and then after I emailed them my thoughts, the parent replied to say that they had never intended to risk a review, but they were just interested in my opinion anyway. Ffs.

It wasn't me that asked the teacher, it was my DS. They want the teacher's thoughts and views. They are neuro divergent and have struggled to accept what they think is an unfair mark. They value and respect the teacher and so are likely to listen to them. My nervousness is not my DS's. If the teacher suggests pursuing a review my DS will absolutely want to pursue it.

Hi, so our son was 1 mark off a pass in English Lit and Lang. He got no more marks in Lang but 11 were given in Literature so he has now got a grade 4.

Does anyone know if this now means he doesn't have to resit language?

i am waiting for the college to get back to me x

I’d double check with the college as I believe it’s the language only that they need the 4 in. My DD has a 3 in lit (even after the review which got no extra marks as she was only 1 mark off. 4) and doesn’t need test as she got a 6 in language.

HOP1516 · 22/09/2025 16:43

Thanks. College have confirmed he doesn't need to resit now.

Thaats good news
Some Colleges want a 5 or 6. DS was 1 mark off the 6 but they let him enroll while the remark was being done but warned him there was a small chance he couldn't start without the 6, in fact a friend who works there who is HOD for one of his subjects said that wasn't going to happen
He got the news that he had his 6 on the day he started!

That’s good that they let him start—my DC had to go to an alternative school for a week, before the 6 was confirmed. 😒

CocoPlum · 22/09/2025 20:08

DD got an email this evening to say her grade remains a 6 in language. She's gutted - it was a high 6 but she was predicted 8/9 amd working consistently at that level. I think she was really fixed on it changing.

It's not helped that a friend of hers asked for a review of another subject after getting an 8 and it was upped to a 9!

Gutted for her 😔

ForSharpViewer · 22/09/2025 21:01

We had similar with IT. Needed one mark was awarded 5. So moved to the higher garde. 4 state make scheme applied incorrectly. One said marked too harshly.

Examinetheexams · 22/09/2025 21:44

@CocoPlum at least you know you did all you could & unfortunately English does seem to be the least ‘surefire’ subject. Sorry your DD is upset hopefully she is so immersed in her new studies that GCSEs start to feel like old news. Same situation gradewise for my DC & it only went in for review last week, now I’m just sweating that it won’t be in the 1% downgraded!

I am surprised there seem to be a lot of people seeking reviews with 8’s - it wouldn’t cross my mind as it’s an A+!?

Great! We knew he didn’t need the mark for his course it was just whether or not he had to resit with the new government guidelines that they have to pass one of them. Some people say its Language they need but apparently it is actually either of them.

ConBatulations · 23/09/2025 11:53

Some jobs and higher education will ask for a 4 in English Language so it's worth checking possible future requirements.

Glitterngrunge · 23/09/2025 12:23

Just had AQA Lit back - went up five marks with grade change (just paper 1)! School advised this one, DS wasn’t too bothered really but happy with the outcome of course.

Still waiting on Lang which was the one DS was really surprised and upset by (and school also thought harshly marked) 🤞🏻

Great! When did your review request go in?
Just wondering how long they're roughly taking at the mo.
