A Level Chemistry

My daughter received her GCSE’s today, she is planning on studying A level Geography, politics and needs to choose one more A level. She did double science and got 6’s in Chemistry and a 7 in Maths. She is thinking of A level Chemistry but I keep hearing how difficult it is. She works hard and enjoys Chemistry, she isn’t necessarily planning to go to university, she doesn’t know what to do yet so doesn’t necessarily need Chemistry A Level. I was just wondering what other people’s experience of Chemistry A level was? Thank you

She should really consider doing maths rather than chemistry. It keeps far more options open. Unless you love chemistry, I don’t think it should be taken for A-Level. It’s a very marmite A-level. You either get it and love it or it’s a massive struggle (in my view).

I have taught A-level Chemistry for 20 years. A student who enters with a grade 6 at GCSE (triple or combined) is most likely to end up with an E or U. Whilst all things are possible and students can make unexpectedly good progress in two years, I would bet against it and strongly advise a different choice.
