Oxford secondary school advice – Swan, Cheney, Spires or Matthew Arnold?

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for some advice about secondary schools in Oxford. We live in OX4 and my daughter will be starting Year 7 in September 2027.

We’re currently considering The Swan School, Cheney, Oxford Spires and Matthew Arnold.

My daughter hasn’t had the easiest time at primary school and is currently working at around average level, possibly a bit below in some areas. We’re particularly keen on finding a school that supports children who start secondary school as low or medium achievers – somewhere she can feel encouraged, gain confidence and make steady progress without too much pressure.

I’d really appreciate hearing from any parents with children at these schools (or who considered them) – especially how they support children who haven’t had the smoothest academic journey so far.

Happy to DM or chat privately if anyone prefers.

Thanks in advance!

I know two pupils at Swan. One loves it, one doesn’t.

The one who doesn’t is of a nature to push back on any rules and has historically been ever aggrieved at being told to behave. But they are actually improving academically (noticeably).

The one who loves it raved to me about it this summer, and about the great time they were having.

For both, the parents are pleased with Swan.

If you think it suits your kid, I’d suggest going for it.

'soft features'. Christ. Is that really true? I'm astonished.

I saw “soft features” mandated in several posters around the school - including one by the student office where the core expectations are posted up.

I spent my adolescence being told by random men “cheer up love, it might never happen” or “give us a smile then”, so I’m guessing I don’t have soft features and would constantly be in breach of expectations. To be fair, on the 4 pages of detentions listed for that day, I didn’t spot a mention of features so it may not be enforced much, but it is all over the walls.

I know you’ve decided against MA but just to add that ds had a pretty good experience there, especially in Maths which was to me much more creatively taught than I expected - but that was all under the previous head. I would say languages were not great there, and that in general the fit seemed to be better for the more academic children.

@PermanentTemporary that's interesting on MA. It's our local school and while secondary is a long way off for my DS, I am keeping an eye on schools as we are looking to move to a larger house. We really like West Oxford, and want to stay here.
The only school that seems enough of a step up in quality to warrant a move to a different part of Oxford is Cherwell, where there are no guarantees on getting in unless you have the £££ to get a house on the doorstep of the school. So I think we'll be staying here and going for MA.
I know some people in West Oxford bus their kids to Bartholomew school in Eynsham, but I feel it would be unfair to send my DS to a school in a different town where he would end up with no local friends.
