Being quoted £90ph online in London... Have no idea if this is reasonable?!

Should have said 11+!

£65-75 up north. So yes, £90 an hour for London is probably fairly accurate.

If you want to compare rates, try looking on Firsttutors.com website. All self-employed tutors (you just pay for the intro/their contact details). But it'll give you an idea of cost.

TBH, if the tutor you've got details for is known to get good results, I'd snap them up.

Thank you. Was just a Google search - if anyone can recommend someone London based I'd be very appreciative!

We're not in the South East. £2k total for an hour a week for 11 months and a few extra hours over that time for exam tips etc. Mock tests not included.

ClawsandEffect · 08/06/2025 20:27

Just had a quick search on Firsttutors.com for London. Rates seem to START at £150 an hour.

Have you got a nextdoor.co.uk account? Look for a university student that has been through the 11+ themselves. We had one last year and he was £30/hour. He was far better than the grammar school teacher we used prior to him.

We are in London and I did it DIY 4 times. Most recently last year. In DC’s class the other kids did group tutoring or in person and paid from 45 (cash) to 55 per hour. That is what most real primary school teachers charge. It’s equivalent to what most music teachers charge as well.
These tutoring platforms are a racket!
My advice is to find a good local state primary teacher taking eg a career break/working part time/supply and do an in person lesson.

£90 sounds pretty expensive. I’m sure some do charge that but I would only want to pay if I was targeting a top super selective and they had a great track record specific to that school.

what schools are you targeting? Ideally ask parents in y6 who have got places at those schools who they used.

SmashingEggs · 09/06/2025 10:54

Wow that’s a lot. For us it’s £50ph and we go to them. SE in an affluent area

Is that through a recommendation? Always go by recommendations and you absolutely need to talk to the tutors before you commit. Will they gel with your DC? How do they work with children and do they give homework, who will mark the homework and everything you need to ask them.

Beetletweetle · 09/06/2025 11:01

We are in Kent. We pay £35 for an hour a week, for as long as you want. We started yr5 but some start yr4. Mocks are £30 extra if you want to take them.

I'd say it's valuable because dd's tutor really understands the Kent tests, has had his DC through it and is THE local tutor everyone uses if you get on their waiting list early enough (we have already signed up dc2 who is in yr1 for when they get to yr5!)

But if we weren't sure, I'd probably use topdog tutoring and DIY it. But you need time to do this and patience not to get pissed off with DC when they don't get it/are lazy.

I know a tutor locally who just uses all the topdog tutorials and resources but still charges top tutor rates which I think is a little cheeky!

First Tutors is just a website where self-employed teachers list their services.

As a tutor myself, I can tell you that the going rate for very experienced, well qualified tutors is high.

Brilliant if you can DIY it. But for my own children, I pay sky high tutoring rates for the things I can't tutor in. A really good tutor is worth every penny IF they can deliver the results.

Tutorating · 09/06/2025 22:56

In London, different tutors can ‘specialise’ in different schools (grammar vs independents - even N London indies vs SW London indies).

We just paid £150ph once a week for a few months for a tutor. Eye watering - but on the other hand, that’s what plumbers charge in London now. And that was the going rate for 11/13+.
They actually charge less for GCSE & A Level because entrance has basically become an arms race for these school.

We also did lots of work with DS ourselves. He got into every school he applied to. Was that down to the tutor, or would he have got it without the tutor? We’ll never know!

Tutorating · 09/06/2025 22:59

I would advise searching for the specific schools you are looking to apply to. The exams can be very different - grammar schools are much more about speed of working. St Paul’s boys has discursive writing that very few other schools have.

So good to know that children are accessing grammar schools based on their abilities and not on their parents’ incomes…..

Those that aren’t able that do get in because of heavy tutoring do massively struggle from around Y7 Easter time.

SummerInSun · 10/06/2025 14:35

Normal for London. But only spend that sort of money if you have a personal recommendation and if your child has “gelled” with the tutor after a few sessions.

It is also good to know that some kids get access to great comps due to their parents' ability to move next to a very good school whenever they want.

It swings both ways doesn't it?

elliote · 10/06/2025 15:09

@Schoolhelp23 I'm an 11+ tutor with several years of experience and am based in London. I charge less than what you've been quoted. Feel free to send me a message.
