Next thread. 10 days of exams to go. Looks like we’re all heading into a busy week this week - good luck!

There will probably be new GCSE Results Day threads popping up, but it would be nice if we can keep this one on the back burner as we've become our own little support group.

Agree!

Great post from @ditismooi (you are an MFL specialist also I think?) wrt Spanish foundation. Yes the photo question, no need to say anything clever. Literally use hay – hay un hombre that’s one answer. Esta feliz – second answer (assuming he is not crying). As long as it’s possible – he is a father, he is a teacher – it’s acceptable (obvs there’s an elephant is not). Easy full marks on that one.

The translation obvs depends on the content, but it doesn’t vary that much if you look at past papers.

And hard agree re the essays. Even the 90 worder is straightforward. Remember opinions and reasons. And cover every bullet – even if you only write one sentence.

Tbf any good MFL teacher will have covered all this, but I know only too well how easy it is for a 15/16yo not to remember everything they are told :)
H paper is a lot more challenging (as it should be ofc).

ETA: best wishes to all Spanishers - hang in there!

Edited

thanks - yes - although I'm was / a Germanist rather than Spanish ( my spanish grammar is literally at GCSE foundation level and I've picked it up from trying to help DS since year 8 - trying to convince him that a bit of solid practise the night before- the foundation exam is pretty straightforward and worth looking at rather than half heartedly winging it. The higher is much harder ofc and needed consistent effort something DS wasn't prepared to do !

Agree!

I’m more than happy to keep these going. It will be good to see the cohort into sixth form and beyond. This thread has been going since year 7 I think!

I assume it’s not just me feeling a bit emotional right now!! DD is on her way home and I’m blubbing. So proud of all of them 😍

I’ve had a little cry too!

achangeofnameisasgoodasarest · 16/06/2025 11:21

@QueenMabby I'm hoping DD2 is being a little bit pessimistic. But it's combined anyway and she was much happier with bio and chem. She always focuses on what has gone wrong.

Anyhow, she's apparently gone off with the other boarders to 'blurt' everything they know about their music set texts onto a large whiteboard. Probably the best thing they can do at this stage.

I asked her how she'd celebrate when she's finished.

'Music seminar, flute group, choir practice'(!)

Rock and roll.

OhCrumbsWhereNow · 16/06/2025 11:25

Congratulations to all those who finished with Physics this morning!

DD just has music left and then she's done.

I feel ridiculously sad and emotional about her leaving.

rosemarble · 16/06/2025 11:40

From DS "what do I win?"

Me: 10 weeks holiday.......

rosemarble · 16/06/2025 11:40

and never having to wear navy polyester trousers again!

SuperTrooper14 · 16/06/2025 11:48

rosemarble · 16/06/2025 11:40

and never having to wear navy polyester trousers again!

And never will we have to rush to buy them before school goes back in September! No more painful shopping trips to buy shoes that meet the draconian uniform rules. Thank god!

kary42 · 16/06/2025 11:53

Same school but Sixth form uniform to buy. Different colour jumper and tie but no blazers. Only trousers for girls, could choose to wear skirts in lower school.

Oblomov25 · 16/06/2025 11:55

Physics was ok. Spanish tomorrow.

Those saying no more school uniform shops, our school expects smart wear, so I still need to get a pack of M&S shirts and some shoes.

labradorservant · 16/06/2025 12:01

DD says Aqa physics combined higher was good. But everything has been ‘good’. Good could mean anything! From I answered something to I got a 9. Schools predictions may have well been written in Russian so no idea what we’ll get.
She said she thought it would be bad. Seemed quite confident yesterday but then she didn’t do much revision. Maybe she was actually avoiding it? Done now.
FM left to go. Apparently no revision today, sleepover with friend who has finished, tonight, and then back on it at 11 tomorrow…..

Eccle80 · 16/06/2025 12:10

Only had a brief message from DS as he was going out with a friend after, but he said AQA higher physics went well, it’s the subject where he’d be most confident of getting a 9 though as he has always been well over the grade boundary in mocks.

And that’s it all over! 22 exams seemed an endless mountain a few weeks ago. Well done to all the kids who are now finished, and to us all supporting them too!

Timetochangeagaint · 16/06/2025 12:15

Congratulations to those DC that finish today

DS has Spanish and Further Maths still to go - hoping the heatwave holds off till after Wednesday

Physics Edexcel Higher was alright , hard - but expecting that and he could handle it . Currently lying on his bed looking at his phone - looks absolutely shattered , white as a sheet and puffy hay fever eyes despite the antihistamine

Mine's off to college to study animals – she'll be mainly wearing overalls and Crocs!

It sounds strange but vasaline round the nostrils first thing can help - I had to rely on it for years while pg and bf and Gp would perscribe nothing but it might help along side the antihistamines.

We all looking forward to being done with school uniform - all the sixth forms have unforms but the college it's own clothes and at least you can dress for the weather.

Glad I'm not the only one in this position...

I resorted to sending DD polls on WhatsApp with various options to choose from - and still have no real clue!

August 21st will be full of surprises I fear...

VivaDixie · 16/06/2025 12:45

Well done to all the students now on holiday! DS is still at school on a Spanish masterclass but due home shortly after Edexcel Combined Foundation Physics this morning.

It is going to take all the motivation to get him to revise spanish this afternoon but i want him to get some 90 word questions in.

It was his 16th yesterday = he didnt do much but did go to the Soccer Aid footy match last night which he loved. He is now getting excited for our holiday in August.

I am more than happy to revive this thread before 21 August 😊

ChannelLightVessel · 16/06/2025 12:55

@CatHairEveryWhereNow Has he tried a nasal spray? XH says it works much better than oral medication.

Congratulations to everyone who has finished! Only two to go here…😬

I think our DDs are the same person! Didn’t try the poll thing. I have about 3 questions before I get told I’m annoying.

The poll avoided me being 'annoying' while getting me max info.

Today's is:

  • I cooked it
  • Went about as well as it could but not my dream paper
  • Yeah, a 7 will be a good result
  • Hmmm, probably a 6 if the examiner is in a good mood
  • That exam cooked me

(It's her best subject by a long way and she's going into it with full marks in the NEAs, so aiming for a 7 and anything above aspirational if paper is nice).

SB1971 · 16/06/2025 13:11

Gah-am afraid me and DS have fallen out.
He has never had any form of job and never seemed that bothered about getting one. My sis in law gave me a contact for a sports holiday club-I messaged and asked for some info which I was going to pass onto DS.
The main man has asked for his number for a chat.
DS is refusing as he says he doesn’t want to work over the summer….
I shd have spoken to him beforehand I know but am fuming-we do everything for him and he can’t be bothered to answer a phone call. I said he might not even get the job and it wouldn’t be all summer anyway but nope.
I reacted badly and said that I wouldn’t fund anything extra then in the holidays if he couldn’t be bothered to make any effort to find work.
He is so different to DD who was really keen to get a job and make £.
He is now in his room and to be honest can stay there

I was quoting Timetochangeagaint - but another usful tip for her to try.

DS and I really aren't bad this year with hayfever which is a surprise.

DS eczema cleared up - it had a birch pollen trigger - when we moved down here and I don't think we've as frequent bad years with hayfever.

DD2 come home - teacher for remaining subject wasn't in - so couldn't ask them to go over last bit she found she needed to yesterday and she could have gone to an additional math class for tommorows exam but no-one told her. So she's annoyed.
