New data - 2021-2023 Progression from GCSE to A level

Been lots of interest in this area, so posting the latest Cambridge Assessment report, just out, which has all GCSEs and A level grades back to pre-pandemic levels. For grade 7s in the subject progress to A level grades (%s) is as follows:

So Spanish hardest to get highest grades in across the piece. Quite a bit of consistency for the As and A*s, but much more difference for the Bs. Not a researcher or statistician just curious mum with DS coming up to A levels and could go in any direction for A levels. Enjoy the report!

These are cumulative.
So 50% of those doing maths with a 7 get a D or lower.

Hollyhedge · 31/05/2025 19:53

Yeah cumulative

And 72% who do maths A level with a 6 get a D or lower.

Not sure how useful this is really, considering this data is based on students who were awarded TAGs for GCSE, and the A level requirements were quite different coming out of the pandemic with a few years students were given advanced information before the A level etc - last summer was really the first summer everything went back to normal.

Thank you, somewhat interesting

It's interesting that drama, music and PE all have relatively low percentages of A/A* for 8 and above compared to most of the other subjects.
I had heard that it's very difficult to get an A* in drama, not sure why.

I think Covid skews the results so much it's meaningless. My nephew got TAG of 8s&9s in 2021 for his GCSEs, completely bombed his A levels in 2023 and had to go into clearing (suspect his sixth form was also to blame, basing his predicted grades on his GCSEs rather than his mocks).

This data will be useful for those that sat GCSEs in 2023 and A levels this year but I think it's difficult to extrapolate anything from the previous 5 years because of the Covid impact.
