Parent teacher feedback

At our child’s first secondary school parents evening this week, a teacher told us straight out that our child is gifted in their subject and asked for our permission to record this information for Year 8. They also mentioned giving extra work. This is all fine but I was a bit surprised by the term "gifted," as I didn’t think schools still used it. There was only 5 mins and then I didn’t get to ask more or what the permission part meant. Any ideas?

Which subject? Is your child interested in this subject or is this information a shock to you? What information does the teacher want to record?

I'd drop them a line to discuss further - clearly they are very invested in your kid and their potential.

I think across the board "gifted and talented" has gone by the by but we've definitely had a couple of secondary teachers tell us DS1 has a real gift for their subject/is a brilliant x, etc. Some kids really flourish in secondary and it's fab to have teachers who are spotting and nurturing it (especially after years of primary teachers saying "absolutely fine, doing well across the board, keep on doing what he's doing"...)

It’s a core subject and one my child has excelled at since since first they were 4-5yrs old so it’s not a surprise. I just didn’t really know what they meant by me giving permission. I said yes, it’s not a big deal but I was just a bit surprised at the wording. I guess I’ll have to email to find out if I need to know more!

Why did they need permission to record this? Are you sure you heard correctly?

Romane · 15/05/2025 20:47

Child said they heard the same as I did. God knows. Probably best I email the school and check what they meant 😆

The gifted and talented programme ended in 2010. The D of E still use the word in their written literature.

If it's maths, given you said it's a key subject, lots of assistance and support on gifted and talented board.

Thanks. It’s English. Haven’t heard back from school yet.
