Ours is flagging now
been on and off chemistry all day and has asked to be woken early tomorrow to go over last couple of bits rather than plough on
which is fine

going to see if he can face computer application in a bit or leave until tomorrow evening

we’ve done a chunk

he’s not looked this tired so early in the day before and that was with exams, revision and full time school

study leave now so have tomorrow at home after exam

groovylady · 18/05/2025 17:58

I keep hearing rumours that dds school is planning "something" wrt exam leave but no info yet 🤷‍♀️

Honestly, I would take all of this with a pinch of salt until the GCSEs are over. Once the exams are done, he can think about what enjoyed most (or hated least), and he could do a little bit of exploration into uni courses. Until then I’d just be encouraging about everything 😊 He may change his mind again once he gets his results.

Very true. DD1 (6 years ago) had planned on doing ‘something sciencey at uni’ so picked A level Maths, Biology, Chemistry & Geog but over summer did a finance course and didn’t get the predicted grade 8 GCSE for biology so switched to Maths, Chemistry, Economics & Psychol - ended up adoring Econ! Best to have an open mind.

Pleased to report DS has come round and done a chem past paper with DH and then consented begrudgingly at first to look at power and conflict poetry with me which he would do occasionally with me since March . He cheered up as time went on as it became clear that he had done work on it and remembered quite a lot . He knows London well and checkin out my history in detail . Do a bit tomorrow straight after school . He’s not getting his phone back though till the am . Supper now and bed . Chem in the morning . So much bloody content - it’s daft frankly . I’m not sure he’s cut out for alevel study despite being bright but really young in his year ( very late august baby too ) . So many gaps from Covid and misdiagnosis of SEND at primary meant he’s had to claw his way up sets to get on higher papers . another year I reckon he’d be more mature for this .

Daffodilpup · 18/05/2025 20:13

Does anyone know off the top of their head what the possible chem practicals could be for aqa foundation tomorrow? Trying to go over them and realised teacher only told them for bio and not chem. now panicking. Will have a google but if anyone knows please let me know. Nothing like last minute cramming!!

groovylady · 18/05/2025 20:26

Dd has done no revision today 🙄
She enjoyed her extra curricular

BreakfastClub80 · 18/05/2025 20:34

DD has been going over chemistry and French (Tuesday). She seems reasonably confident and good energy-wise. Needed a break yesterday though.

best of luck to everyone this week.

Such a heavy week ahead here too. Hoping he gets through it to half term. to focus on paper 2s. He was supposed to be studying chemistry today but is really struggling. He watched a paper 1 youtube revision guide but glazed over midway through and admitted he hadn't leaned much. He's taking a break now. He isn't stressed or angry which I am grateful for but has shifted to being very un-focused and non-motivated this weekend.

Hope your DC are okay and you all are hanging in there.

Same here with DS too, he’s had enough of revision, just can’t focus anymore.

filtering (separating salt/water from Rock salt)
evaporation and crystallisation to get the salt out
distillation (getting water from sea water)
fractional distillation
chromatography (method, rf is paper 2)
making soluble salt from insoluble base. Full marks given for baking correct acid and base or identifying why the wrong reactants didn’t make the right salt. They like this topic.
measuring energy change. Like polystyrene cup and lid. Control variables etc.
sorry about grammar!

Yes - English Lang 1 was 08/05, English Lit 1 12/05. Last Wednesday she did last 2 Lit and 2nd Lang.

Thank you, would you know what any of the questions were for literature paper 1 (poetry and prose) and or which poems came up, please?

NicolaCasanova · 18/05/2025 21:02

QueenMabby · 18/05/2025 11:55

Yes. We did. Edexcel IGCSE Eng Lang this coming Friday too. Did you have a question about it?

Yes, please it was to know which questions/poems came up on lit. paper 1 on the 12th, please (poetry and prose)?

I don’t I’m afraid. All I know is that the two poems that did come up were the two she absolutely didn’t want! She said it was fine though, and a lot nicer than she expected it to be.

edit to add - her friend at a different school did the same exam, but her school had poems for just one poet (Hughes), whereas my daughter had 15 different ones.

NicolaCasanova · 18/05/2025 21:04

Poisoningpigeons · 18/05/2025 12:52

Yes my DC. Not much chance of me getting any info out of them though...

Any chance they can remember which poems came up, please?

NicolaCasanova · 18/05/2025 21:07

NotDonna · 18/05/2025 16:45

DD3 sitting IGCSE (U.K.) and had literature 1 on 12/5 with language 1 scheduled this week. Not sure if that’s the same as your DC @NicolaCasanova - I got a full account if you want info.

Oh yes please! Just for Lit. 1.

Amazingly DD2 was in a cooperative mood and just told me she did a question comparing War Photographer and Blessing.

Same here. Had the whole weekend to study but DS seems exhausted. We had 1 hour of a maths tutor this morning so at least he’s done something. But I expected more revision.

He has ADHD so forcing him to do anything is counter productive.

Delatron · 18/05/2025 21:36

I’m kind of taking solace in those that have said their children have done no or not much revision today. Expected DS to be doing lots of last minute revision for PE and Chemistry and it doesn’t seem to have happened!

My ds has chemistry and PE tomorrow as well. He did a bit of Chem today but no PE 🤦‍♀️ oh well fingers crossed for them tomorrow!

QueenMabby · 18/05/2025 21:51

@Poisoningpigeons - dd did war photographer and blessing too.

@NicolaCasanova - the unseen poem was “Vocation” by Rabindranath Tagore.

@BreakfastClub80 French is on Wednesday not Tuesday if the extra day helps!

@PrincessOfPreschool that's not correct about English lit and lang IGCSE; yes they are international quals but not as such aimed at ESL speakers, or at any rate not all the specs. Plenty are taken by students in England whose mother tongue is English – at private schools and those who are not in school .

NotDonna · 18/05/2025 22:41

Yes. DD compared War Photographer & Blessing. The unseen was about a young person who wanted to be like the hawker he saw, the gardener he saw & sone one else (I now can’t recall & DD is in bed). The whole poem is actually on student room now. Of Mice & Men was Slim or loneliness. She chose Slim but 90% of classmates chose loneliness. Is your DC ok?

NotDonna · 18/05/2025 22:43

Apologies I was responding to queries and hadn’t seen others reply to @NicolaCasanova already with the same info!

NotDonna · 18/05/2025 22:50

@MissyB1 & @Delatron DD (also ADHD but medicated, which defo takes the edge off for her) also has Chemistry & PE tomorrow. Again, with chemistry she’s been getting anything from a 3 to a 7 so who knows! She’d love a 6; I’m just hoping she passes! Will not be taking sciences forward. She did a chemistry paper yesterday and a PE one today. Both seem a bit ropey. She does actually know her PE stuff so fingers crossed.
Good luck to everyone - it’s a big week!

Yeah we are all over the shop with both Chemistry and PE. PE has been his strongest subject but I’ve been surprised at the lack of revision this weekend. I can’t say anything as he does the opposite of what I say. Oh well at least he’s going in and doing them.
