Hi I just wanted to get everyone's views on wether I am being unreasonable or not my daughter is in year 9 and the uniform is grey pleated skirt or grey trousers, my daughter has sen and is very sensitive to textures and materials, she has had the same skirt for the last 3 years but now is ridiculously small and they don't do a larger size, we can not find a grey skirt/trousers with the same material so we found black school trousers but school have said no the only reasonable adjustments they could offer was black trousers with skirt over (which my child can not do due to the fabrics then rubbing together) she has had some medical issues also with stomach and back pain and has had various tests etc I feel like im fighting a losing battle and my daughter is just so unhappy in school being so uncomfortable all day am I being too unreasonable to be requesting this?

Do you have a second hand uniform at your daughters school?
My SEN child hated new clothes but would happily wear second hand. I guess they had been worn in a little and less starched feeling.
It's really hard to find the right sensory clothing but you need to match the school colours

I think they are being unreasonable TBH, coming from a parent with an autistic son. A pair of black trousers harms no-one.

Who has said no and have you escalated up to SLT/governors if needed. I think they need a strongly worded letter that they may be breaking the Equality Act and you will be taking legal advice if the situation can’t be resolved informally.

Thank you they don't do second hand uniforms and skirts we have bought which are new we have washed quite a few times so they don't feel as new but honestly we have tried so many different skirts and trousers and none are the same. I've been to the headteacher with it and she said no 😞

mmmh, I’d still be pushing it to a complaint. My husband works as a disability specialist clinical psychologist and he says she’s taking the mick! (Polite version!) PS is this an academy?

Sezza123123 · 27/04/2025 19:54

Thank you yes it's an academy I've just emailed her to clarify exactly what she has said previously and just explained that this is not really reasonable for my child's needs etc and just asked again if it possible for black trousers if she says no again I'm going to have to look into taking it further, my daughter assessed by educational physiologist who has said on the report about my daughter's sensory needs but she's not formally diagnosed with anything yet.

Sounds like a plan. It’s also always about need rather than diagnosis too. A good next step could be speaking to your local SENDIASS service. They can offer you advice and potentially help advocate for you too. SENSOS is another service you can access (national helpline)
