Amount of GCSE revision is concerning. Help me over a disagreement with DD

DD in Y11. She is doing an average amount of work and on track for good grades. She does three subjects a day that only last for 50 minutes each. She also takes Art Textiles which she spends a disproportionate amount of time on. On an average weekend, she will procrastinate until about midday on Sunday to do any work in her sketchbook. This leads to a long, 8 hour marathon to attempt to finish a labour-intensive subject. She will stay up until 2 or 3 o'clock in the morning and I am worried she could be sleepy at school. I advised her to let the subject hang and don't mind her failing Textiles as long as she focuses on her other subjects, such as Maths, Biology and History. She replied, saying her teacher will shout at her if she doesn't complete the work. Am I doing the wrong thing by telling her to fail Textiles on purpose? Is she already doing enough work?

textiles will be over soon - help her with her finished project and if she needs help - a piece should be produced first week back as. NEA

figure out with her what she needs to do how and time it so she spends 2/3 hours stops then does other stuff

forcing her to do a 2 day NEA unprepared is going to be awful for her

If she's on track for good grades and has been working consistently, why would you not want her to finish her Textiles work? I don't think telling your child to fail is a good message. Perhaps talk instead about how much work she needs to do in other subjects? If se's keeping on track, as your statatement suggets, she may not need to be doing too much. (For what it's worth, my DD spent most of the Easter holiday finishing her Art portolio to the exclusion of almost everything else when she took GCSE). But she was also a good student, and knew that she had time and was doing enough revision in class).

Hi everyone, thank you for the replies and votes. I read them and still stick with my opinion, but backed off a bit. She has now finished her Textiles exam and is doing consistent revision of IMPORTANT subjects now. Thanks but no thanks!

Well yes exactly what I said textiles finishes early so once it is over she has plenty of time all the art subjects finish early

yiur attitude towards it as being unimportant is awful though just imagine where we would be without textiles though

I think your final statement nails the issue..

Important subjects? Hmm Surely the importance of a subject can be partly judged by how much the student enjoys it, and what they want to do with their life? If she wants to be a fashion designer or a tailor I doubt she’d tell you if she did, Textiles GCSE is a good start!

Stripeyanddotty · 08/04/2025 18:55

You’re very rude.

Tiswa · 08/04/2025 18:58

The textiles industry was fundamental in pushing forward the Industrial Revolution and is still very important today!

The skills DD has learnt in terms of sewing and creating clothes have been really good life skills.

Thst said it is yiur daughters time management that is an issue

Hi guys. This is going to be my last post because I just wanted to say APRIL FOOLS. Jk but I am actually the 15 year old daughter that I wrote about. I take GCSE Textiles and I only posted the thread in the first place because my dad thought this way and we had a debate. I wanted to see if he was right and I was spending too much time on Textiles. I loved how everyone agreed with what i thought. I'm also dying at the way you all replied to my rudeness as I tried to write what my dad would say. Thankss for all the replies, it did make me feel a bit better.
