Truro school advice

We are looking to relocate from Berkshire to Truro area. Our son will finish his current school next year (year8) age 13 (the area we live still has the middle school system).
We are considering Truro School although a little nervous moving to Cornwall just as he hits teens, but we have been considering moving down there for years and this seems a good time. Any help or experience of Truro much appreciated, especially regarding music provision.

I'm a former pupil from the days when I was technically an old boy as the school wasn't co-ed at the time. Even then the music provision was strong with a decent number going on to get organ scholarships and choral places at Oxbridge.

Pupils commute from all around Cornwall, so it's not unusual to have an hour on a bus to & from. This can be problematic as it's harder to have a social life with friends outside of school clubs etc. I would definitely think carefully about where you will be living. It's a very long trek from Penzance, Padstow, Fowey etc (all the nice areas where people tend to move to from up country).

It's a nice school with similar issues to any other school. Good sporting facilities.

Thank you for your reply. Very helpful. We had been looking around Porthleven or near the coast but now feel we may be better in or around Truro so the commute won’t be too tiresome and our son might stand a chance of some social life. Any insider knowledge on Gloweth area?

Sorry, can't help with specifics, but I have a friend in Threemilestone who is happy enough to have lived there for around 30 years.

Porthleven would take around 75 - 90 minutes on a school bus. Don't forget to factor in getting to the bus stop as well. My boyfriend at the time lived there & the school rock climbing wall is in his memory.

Please don't take this the wrong way, but the diversity mix in the school doesn't reflect diversity within the community. This can be challenging for people moving down from upcountry. Truro, Falmouth & Treliske are probably the most diverse parts of the county because of their proximity to the hospital and university.

DD went to Truro School. I can’t praise it enough. They treat every child as an individual, encouraging them academically, or in art or sport or music or drama or whatever they are in to. The head is excellent and the teachers fabulous. I’m sure it’s a very minor school on a national scale but it was great for us.

Agree with the previous poster, don’t live too far away from the school. Truro, Falmouth or St Agnes are good places to start looking.
