Sixth Form School

Hi
I was wondering if there are any 6th form schools that are more inclined on traditional teaching methods and less reliant on tech in the Surrey area. Any pointers would be appreciated.

I don't know anything about Surrey but my own dc went to a sixth form college where they went to lessons and had text books and homework etc.

I think A levels are a bit more like this anyway as the students have chosen to be there and there is an element of being treated in a more adult way. Teachers do not need to accommodate for such a broad spectrum of abilities.

Thank you. I've noticed that tech has really taken a toll on my daughters focus and concentration. Therr is also room for so much distraction while she is on it. Hence looking for a school or college that encourages minimal use of tech.

Whereabouts are you in Surrey? I'm presuming Egham from your username? Have a look at
Sixth Form - Newlands Girls' School
Welcome to the Sixth Form – St Richard Reynolds Catholic College (all faiths welcome)
College - Salesian School
You'll need to go and have a look around them to get a feel for them but all of them encourage the use of 'traditional' books and paper etc. As PP said, by 6th form your DD will get a choice whether to use technology to take notes, usually.

I’m not sure if many would “encourage minimal use of tech” - they’re preparing students for university and next stages, and there’s plenty of tech there. Can you be more specific on the issues? My son is at Woking college and most of the homework / materials are put on Teams, but he also has coursebooks, works on wipeable whiteboards in maths lessons, and takes wholly paper handwritten notes. The teachers will recommend books and websites.

At her current school, all notes are on the iPad and onenote, both the students and the teachers. Even the homework submission is all online on onenote. The issue here is that firstly she is struggling to keep time writing the exams as she is quite out of touch with writing as a concept. Secondly as all homeork is online, there is temptation to switch to YouTube and such which are unrelated to school work. Even the textbooks are online unfortunately but I have bought the physical versions of them to keep atleast some time away. Some of it hopefully with come with age maturity as she grows but she's not there yet.

It’s a long way from Egham to Twickenham for Richard Reynolds!

I fear you are trying to uninvent the wheel. At Uni all resources are online, essays submitted and passed through plagiarism checkers online, notes taken in lectures on laptops. Schools are preparing kids for the next stage. You are possibly fighting the wrong battle. If she has issues with handwriting then seek advice about getting extra time in exams.

It’s not so bad (17 mins on train and then max 10 mins on foot?), quite a few do the journey in the opposite direction for Strode’s. Not ideal if you want local friends admittedly.

My DC left sixth form last year. She was the last year at her school to get textbooks and exercise books for all subjects as standard. The year below her all got given laptops on joining and these are used for all lessons, there are online textbook equivalents and classwork and homework are done and assignments submitted online. Even if a school is minimum tech now, if may well completely change in the next year or so. As pps point out, unis have been doing this for some years. There are some problems with this, handwriting for example, which is required for exams but will get very little practice, though at some point I expect exams will go on line too….
