How would you feel if your ADHD child came home and told you that this was said by a teacher to the whole class?

How do you know how many sanctions his classmates are getting?

Shirt untucked is a sanction at ours as well. Where isn’t it??

Because we have a mums WhatsApp and we all chat!

I was replying to the PP who said 4 sanctions since January isn't good but it really is in comparison to other students in his year.

He's a top student in the year; not that I need to justify that!

I think it’s acceptable to query neurodiversity in the way we query gender identity but the phrasing is rude and it isn’t something a teacher should say to a classroom.

I think you've got a bit muddled there.

It is true that a scarily high percentage of the prison population has ADHD and/or co-morbidities like language and communication difficulties. Something like 80% of the prison population.

But the reverse is not true. Just because you have ADHD does not mean you will end up in prison.

More likely we said. If unmedicated. I myself have adhd high functioning more the add type in all honesty as does my 15 year old. Meds have been great. Now my bf and my dd (not her dad) have adHd more hyper side and ye drugs and prison are likely if you don't medicate. Not definitely but more likely. My bf had meds as a child then stopped tsking them within the year he fractured someone's jaw and went to prison. He's done all drugs and I've managed to get him back on meds and he's stopped been anti social. My hyper 10 year old behaviour wise was awful and I'm a very calm person as is her dad and my add 15 year old. The hyper child is more at risk of what the other person agreed with

If he's not sitting and is misbehaving then ask for an increase in his meds or a top up. What's he on?

So ALL unmedicated ADHD sufferers end up drug addicts or in prison? Really?

No i said he will find cocaine and marijuana helpful if not on meds. It calms the mind. Cocaine for adhd doesn't make you hyper it literally levels you like adhd meds and marijuana calms the racing mind and behaviour. But he's medicated anyways the op says. Maybe he needs an ehcp or a keyworker possibly have sessions with the elsa for logo therapy. Is he hyper focusing on certain subjects as its draining and if his focus goes then misbehave etc so they need to do more. What's his meds and dose?

redcherrie · 08/03/2025 19:17

@FluffyDashhound he is sitting and behaving?

OP posts:
FluffyDashhound · 08/03/2025 19:18

What are the sanctions for then. You said he wasn't behaving and said he can't help it he has adhd. If that's the case increase his meds

MakkaPakkasCave · 08/03/2025 19:19

I’d guffaw and raise a glass to that teacher.

Two for forgetting kit, one for uniform and another for talking. Nothing really mega imo.

The school shouldn't sanction him for any of this. He is ND it's part of his condition. He cannot help it. I'd ask for a review of his iep

FluffyDashhound · 08/03/2025 19:36

Really glad to hear your sons grades are good. My dd has been on meds a year now been through a few. Elvanse caused to much weight loss, methylnate didn't last long enough. Her maths she is y1 level and she is y5 English has improved and she gets support for maths. I'm going for an ehcp Monday so reading your sons grades are very good has given me hope my dd grades will improve as she's so behind from when she couldn't focus and sit still. What meds does your son take

Utter rubbish and ablist. Speaking as someone with 3 unmedicated dc, one at uni, another heading there. I also have a few late diagnosed friends who have none of these issues

Edited

Ableist? I have adhd? I was an alcoholic. And had run ins with the law so there’s no judgment from me. Just because you don’t want something to be true doesn’t mean it isn’t. I hope your kids continue to prove your blinkered attitude right, I honestly do. But there are undeniable statistics that prove what I said is, in fact, true. Of course appropriate management and support makes it far less likely. Also, just fyi, you have no idea what your adult friends with it have been through - addicts lie. No one who knows me now has an idea of how I used to live. Don’t be cocky. It is ableist to deny people’s actual problems and risks.

edited to add I too went to uni - that’s not some preventative measure for addiction?

Adults with ADHD have a higher prevalence of substance abuse disorder (15.2%) compared to those without ADHD (5.6%). Between 33% and 44% of young people with ADHD experience alcohol misuse or dependence, research shows. People with ADHD are 5 to 10 times more likely to have alcohol addiction than those without ADHD.

Reading between the lines, I'd say because they are a nasty individual who delights in other people's suffering? Of course, I don't know them, I'm just basing that on their comment in the context of everything you've said.

Do you have a son with ADHD? It bloody is good going! Most of his classmates have over ten sanctions since January and they are neurotypical.

They get sanctions for not having shirt tucked in for example...

I agree it is good going! Sounds like your son is doing well on the meds and I agree it was an unreasonable thing for the teacher to have said. I think once they reach secondary there is more likelihood that the things reported by our children are what was said, whereas at primary I would be more inclined to questio whether it was a misinterpretation/misunderstanding.

My son is nearly 13 and also has ADHD, he hasn't had a sanction all year! But his school is more relaxed than many others I hear about - his twin sister at other school has had two or three (she doesn't have ADHD and is not "naughty"- one was for wearing tights in PE as it was below zero!) I do think my son's teachers make allowances for him because of his ADHD which is great as consequently he is also doing well academically. Sanctions for things that arise due to their ADHD, caused by poor executive function or talking lots, only serve to demotivate and demoralise, and that does noone any good.

So it's really disappointing if a teacher said that, and I would certainly be raising it with school if my son told me it had been said in his lesson.
