Good residential areas to stay - close to darford grammer school for girls

Hi

My daughter got a place in darford grammer school on the national offer day.
I am planning to relocate from east london for the school now.

I am planning to buy a property to move to any area closer to school. What are good residential areas that are close to reasonable travel distance (public transport) to school?

Do you mean Dartford Grammar? I don’t want to give advice if you mean Darford Grammer, it might be somewhere completely different 😀

suren007 · 04/03/2025 12:37

@ARainyNightInSoho sorry, yes I meant Dartford Grammar school for girls.

Assuming you mean Dartford Grammar: some children in my area (Blackheath) go there because of there being a direct trainline. Blackheath is a very pretty area with a ‘village’ very leafy and green. But, expensive and IMO quite a long journey to school (25 minutes on the train plus getting to the school from the station). Further on down that trainline and closer to Dartford are Charlton, Woolwich and Abbey Wood. Not so pretty but some nice houses and much cheaper. None of these places are on the underground or overground. You have to rely on trains.

Sorry, forgot that Woolwich now has the Elizabeth Line and DLR!

How have you got a place at an oversubscribed school that is so far from where you live?

socks1107 · 04/03/2025 17:21

You could look at places like greenhithe/stone or Wilmington

My first thoughts as well!

Just looked it up - weirdly after some categories including high scoring, siblings, LAC etc, it’s done on exam score not distance.

I'd not want to live near Dartford - maybe Bean or one of the other villages? Or buy a house on the Trainline which goes to Dartford. People have mentioned Woolwich but New Eltham, Eltham and Sidcup are nicer and their trains go to Dartford station.

ARainyNightInSoho · 05/03/2025 07:53

Greenhithe/Stone is lovely!

suren007 · 05/03/2025 09:58

I guess there are few governors places that are offered to kids who scored very high. My daughter had very high score so may be that's why we got this school.

@AnneElliott you are saying that you won't want to stay near dartford. is it because it is not as pretty as other places in Kent? or is it because it is probably too commercial?
Actually we had put dartford grammar school lower in our preference list but we could not get an offer from the schools which we had put higher in the preference. That's why I haven't been to the area before so no idea about the area.

I agree with this poster and I lived in Dartford for 9 years. Bexley Village is also on the train line. Does it have to be public transport? There are some nice places a bit of a drive away. Meopham, Vigo, Eynsford, Hartley for example.

AnneElliott · 05/03/2025 19:07

Dartford is a bit of a shithole really. So wouldn't want to live there. So would seek out surrounding areas which you can get to the school from.

socks1107 · 05/03/2025 21:57

Bluemonkey1 I'm in one of the villages you've mentioned, we have a train line but not to dartford. My dds were at dartford schools when we moved here and it became a headache.
Whether buses have improved now is worth looking at because there are some nicer places than dartford itself

Fullofpudding · 05/03/2025 22:23

So you're sending her to a school you've not even looked at or know where it is just because you wanted her to go to a grammar. Insane!!

TheJaneyB · 05/03/2025 22:41

i grew up in North Kent and a lot of the local villages had school buses that ran to the Dartford Grammars. You could ask the school for details of these and that might help you narrow your search. But generally it will depend on your budget and also where else do you need to get to - do you need to commute back to London for work? There are lots of options, some very affordable but maybe not the nicest of areas and others in sought after villages that cost £££. If you give a sense of budget and requirements people might be able to give better suggestions.
