SW London Grammar and private senior school entry 2026

Setting up this thread for those of us with DC joining year 7 SW London schools in 2026.

We’re planning to apply to KCS, Hampton, Epsom and Reed’s.

Have been living in Dubai for three years, returning in August for year 6 at DS’ old prep school.

DS has an online tutor focussing on exam technique and any gaps in the curriculum, plus Atom. Current school is great but definitely not preparing him for 11+!

Sadly academic scholarships do not get redistributed (because they are over offered) and the schools do over offer general places by a ratio that is higher than imagined so it takes a while to have enough rejections to turn to the WL.

sevilleseville · 16/02/2026 18:13

Just to reiterate that someone turning down a place does not automatically mean it frees up a place for someone else. (Same with scholarships). All schools over offer - some by as much as 3+ times the number of places they have. Some schools never go to waitlists some years. Others exhaust their waitlists and start calling up pupils they said No to. ( and this can happen at the very top schools..)

I have a DS at Emanuel who is in Y7 - he's very happy there. Feel free to PM me if you have any specific questions and I will try and answer. It's hard making the decisions!

Thank you so much! I’d love to know how friendly/inclusive your DS finds it? Does it lean towards wealthier families, does it feel diverse (also in terms of ethnicities)?

Are clubs included in the price, and does your DS find that there’s a good variety? Has it changed much in terms of ethos with the new headmaster, is it more laid back or feel pressurised at all? Is there any streaming/sets?

Sorry, hope that’s not too many!

I will be turning down LU, Alleyns (academic scholarship), DC (academic scholarship), Emmanuel, Hampton next week most probably after the offer days. I'm not sure how the scholarship places get reassigned.

I hope these places make some kids and parents very happy, it's been a tough ride.

Thank you so much for sharing that. Its definitely been a tough ride! Happy to know youre decided and sorted for your first choice.

Could you share with me too please - either a pm or on here if easier. I get the impression Emanuel make a lot of offers!

Alleyns and Emanuel approx, about 150 per year group, larger year group than GDSTs or some of the Central Zone 1 locations.

Yeah I think it's 96 spaces for emanuel and 116 for alleyns this year, excluding their y6 kids. My comment was about the offer numbers - I'd heard that emanuel offer ~3x their spaces and alleyns ~1.5x. Which sounds about right to me based on the offers I've heard - putting this here in case useful in future years!

Do you know if Alleyns tends to go to waitlists if theyve already over offered?

I suspect Emanuel is a bit less than that- they took 300 through to interview (at least that was what I was told by their admissions team on the interview day) and I know of at least 3 kids who are on the waiting list. Would expect their numbers are 2 to 2.5x but might be wrong

Surbimum · 17/02/2026 21:14

Does anyone know the rate at which KGS over offer?

we also know quite a few kids on the Emanuel WL.
the school got caught with too many accepting a few years ago and had to create an extra form, they have been very cautious about over-offering ever since especially as their latest GCSE results are amazing

Funskylab · 20/02/2026 18:29

hi all,
congrats on the offers !
any views on PHS vs GL? 99% sure we're going for GL given the spectacular reputation (academically, pastoral, extra curricular...) but PHS is a fantastic school too. thanks for your thoughts on this. x

We had the same choice a few years ago and went with G&L. DD is very happy. I still think both schools are great. It depends on your dd and circumstances.

Seasaltlady · 21/02/2026 07:18

Also trying to decide between FHSS and PHS. What concerns me about FHSS is the amount of time spent offsite if my DD wants to participate in sports - she loves netball and hockey. Does anyone have any experience with the amount of time they would spend offsite at both schools if they were to say be on the netball team. Unfortunately with my job being so demanding I just would not be able to be available to pick her up from other locations mid week.

If DC in sport teams, they spend time off site at other schools grounds for fixtures and transport are arranged by the school. Most prefer to get teams travelling together before and after games so everyone on time and for teachers not to wait if parents late for pick up. Most parents don’t attend mid week games since they have to work etc.

AlwaysMoreThanMeetsTheEye · 21/02/2026 09:07

@Seasaltlady If your DD loves hockey, worth considering how she feels about PHS not doing hockey.
On away matches, the school will usually arrange transport from school and also worth noting that girls become quickly independent when travelling (so sometimes prefer, subject to parental sign off) to make their own way back.

Both great schools! Your DD is very lucky but I understand the dilemma! I have a DD at FHSS and she’s very sporty. The sports provision has exceeded our expectations. It’s a small year group of approx 86 girls and about half have actively taken part in netball. Many choose to do many more sports or focus on other things. Netball practice has been split between their onsite netball court and Battersea Park. They are dismissed from Battersea park and parents collect from there. The girls do get more confident on public transport quickly and the older girls make their way home from there via local buses or train. When they have a fixture, the school always arrange transport to school after. They do hockey in the spring term but it’s not as popular. They have scheduled practice before school in Battersea Park so parents drop off there. Many other sports, such as tennis, football, cross country running and swimming also takes place before school. Gymnastics is on site after school. Sports is very inclusive and there will be squads and recreational sessions. My DD has made many friends through her sports commitments at FHSS. An easy way to settle in.

PHS don’t do hockey. They do lacrosse instead. When we looked at school options last year it was really useful to look at their SOCS website. It gives a good idea on their offering and how many fixtures and teams they put on. Added links here.

We are currently trying to decide between Dulwich College and Trinity for our son so would love to hear views if anyone has a son at either. I really loved the atmosphere and staff at Trinity so my heart says we should go for it, but Dulwich College is nearer to us (not by much but about 20 mins extra public transport journey time down to Croydon, and if we were driving for Saturday sport etc Dulwich is much quicker). I just didn't get the same down to earth friendly feeling at Dulwich, but maybe that is down to the grounds / buildings?! Also feel Trinity gradually going co-ed from 2027 might be beneficial, as we had never really intended to go for an all boys school.

We have a DS at DC who is now in Y9. He came from a local state primary and we applied to Trinity as well as Whitgift. He was not offered a place at Trinity after interview but was at Whitgift. I had to admit at the time I was thoroughly taken by Trinity and was sad that he never got a place, even though Dulwich is almost on our doorstep.

However, we were still delighted with Dulwich and so far have remained so. We really liked Dr. Spence, who has since handed over (with a minor blip in the middle) to Mr Milne (who I had previously met at Emanuel interviews for my DS) who I had very much liked at the time, so am equally pleased he moved to Dulwich.

My son knew no one at arrival, was not particularly sporty and pretty 'nerdy' on the whole, but has never felt as if he didn't belong. He's played hockey, been in school and house plays and has carved out a good group of friends who are fanatic about the things he is and seemingly coped pretty well academically without much prompting from us as regards homework and the like, which is exactly what I'd hoped from going private at secondary.

I'm not sure that I could really say that DC is 'down to earth', but that's more because I feel that no upper tier academically selective private school really truely is, there is always that air of expectation (academically and pastorally) from parents who are paying for education. But that is not the same thing as saying that our experience hasn't been incredibly friendly and welcoming across the board, from staff to parents, for which we are very grateful. Our DS now looks across at the DC buildings when we pass out of term term with a sense of pride that that's his school! I do sometimes catch myself worrying if that has a sign of arrogance or priveledge attached to to it, but, knowing him, more feel that he is happy and proud of the place he goes to school which is heartwarming and am glad that there is no fear or trepidation attached to the sight of it!

On a final note about distance, our other real option was Whitgift, which is a similar distance from us as it would have been to Trinity. The decision over Whitgift for our DS was likely made with more than a little influence regarding distance to the school. I can't stress now how glad we are we picked a school 10 minutes drive, 35 minutes walk away, rather than 30-40 minutes drive away! It makes his and our life just that little bit easier, and those little bits all add up in the end!

Emanuel parent here - year 9. Overall, very happy. It is friendly and inclusive but not as diverse and leans towards wealthy families. That being said, there is no showing off we witnessed as we are ethnically diverse and not wealthy.

Clubs are included and a lot of variety. Ethos hasn't changed with new headmaster - continuing on the successful transformation path that the previous head set out and tinkering around the edges. Still kind, caring, supportive environment.

Streaming in maths from year 8 if I recall correctly and then expect more will be streamed from year 10 for other subjects. It is not a cut throat, competitive environment academically and homework is very sensible.

There is the odd subject that teaching could be better but that's a small price to pay for such a happy, positive environment, and we expect that will get better in the GCSE years.

Hope this is helpful.
