Help with GCSE history

DS is in y11 and seems to have done well in all of his mocks (5,6 and 7’s) except for history where he keeps getting 2’s and 3’s and doesn’t understand what he’s doing wrong.

He’s a good, articulate writer and his subject knowledge seems ok. Timing in the papers has been an issue in the past but he’s getting on top of that more. He just doesn’t seem to have a clue how to answer the questions or what the examiner is actually looking for, and it’s making him completely demotivated to the point where he now says he hates history, never wants to hear the word ‘history’ again, and he won’t revise because he doesn’t care anymore.

I offered to help him because I did history A level (a long time ago, but I did get an A lol) so I figured I could at least help demystify some techniques for him (even though I feel the teachers should surely have been doing this for the past year and a half(!)) - but then he showed me a past paper and OMG the questions are written in such opaque language now, even I couldn’t figure it out! I remember it as being more ‘Compare and contrast…’ or ‘Show that…’ or ‘Discuss…’ but there was none of that, just gobbledygook. I told him I wasn’t surprised he was struggling.

He watched a walk-through video that the teacher had recommended and seemed more confident going into the mock but the poor soul has come out with a 3 again and he just doesn’t know why. The only feedback he got was ‘Expand your answer’ when he’d already written three pages! He really needs 5’s in everything to get his desired college place and I’m at a loss as to how to help him.

Any advice, links, hints, tips, gratefully received please. Thanks!

What exam board does he sit?

KezzyBoo21 · 25/01/2025 10:09

I’m actually not sure whether it’s AQA or Edexcel (I asked him but he couldn’t remember 🙄 and I’m at work now so can’t check any of his past papers). They’re studying Nazi Germany, crime & punishment, Elizabethan England, and the Cold War, if that helps?

Not much help other than to say assuming he's doing 8 or so subjects, and is getting 5,6,7 in all those, then one lower grade for history won't matter at all. He can choose not to even disclose that grade. I would focus on doing as well as he can in his other subjects, maybe trying to move a 6 to a 7.

StillTryingToKeepGoing · 25/01/2025 10:11

This isn’t quite what you’re looking for, as he seems to need help with decoding questions, but the overly simplified channel on you tube is great for refreshing knowledge and is enjoyable revision !

So that's Edexcel, I actually mark two of those four papers. I'm currently out at the moment but will look at what I have to help with the exam questions etc

OMG that would be amazing, thank you 🙏 ❤️

A top tip would be to complete a past paper and then ask the teacher to sit down with him and talk through each answer 1-1 at a time which works for them. I’ve been a secondary school History teacher for 20 years and despite offering this every year very few students ever take me up on it. I’m sure their teacher would jump at the chance to help them get their Grade 4. Also ask when additional intervention occurs - we offer it at different times and constantly tell students but they rarely seem to communicate that message home.

This YouTube channel is really useful - especially the exam technique videos:

I agree with a PP, it won't matter for college if he has one lower grade, assuming he is not taking history any further?

Does he have the revision guides – for history they are done by topic. DS found these useful,

Also just to say, the teacher's feedback is not great is it (can he ask for more detail) but it's often the case that candidates write a lot but it's not answering the question. He's clearly able if he is getting 5-6-7 in other subjects; what he needs is to know how to present his answer, what key words he needs etc. History is not my subject but the teacher or CGP guides should help.

Flustration · 25/01/2025 10:18

Not what you asked, but does he definitely need it? Could dropping it completely be an option?

I've just asked DD (favourite subject GCSE History) and she said you need to keep referring back to the question in your answer. I don't know if that's any help at all!

The issue with this is that he dropped another subject so is only doing 7, and the college requires a 4 in English & maths plus 5’s in four other subjects, so it’s tight. He can technically afford to fail one, but if he fails history AND then has an unexpected tough paper or bad day in one of his others, he’s a bit screwed as no other college nearby does the subject he wants! So it’s a bit concerning and I’d love to be able to get him to pass them all if possible.

He needs to see an example of a good/brilliant essay to help him Understand

Flustration · 25/01/2025 10:28

Yes, worth putting the effort in to try and raise it then.

Do you have any idea whether it's subject knowledge or technique that's letting him down? How is he doing in English Literature?

Do you happen to know if there are examples online anywhere that he could look at?

@KezzyBoo21 ahh I see. In that case yes maybe seeing examples of what good looks like would help. Also I do think his teacher is letting him down by not offering any pointers beyond telling him to expand his answer. Best of luck to him.

Flustration · 25/01/2025 10:32

Plus I'm sure I've seen examples of the same questions being answered to different grade levels somewhere. I'll try and find you a link...

Bpe · 25/01/2025 10:33

Have you asked chat gpt what an example answer would look like

Flustration · 25/01/2025 10:35

I can't find the link I was looking for, but hopefully some of the links I've spammed the thread with will be useful!

Do you have the revision guides, we found them very helpful for that particular GCSE exam board.

Does the school have any extra classes planned for students struggling?

Well like all kids he could probably stand to do a bit more revision but the issue seems to be understanding what is being asked in the questions. He got an 8 for English lit and is going to do A level. This is why I don’t understand what’s going wrong in history and neither does he! If it’s just a case of filling every answer with facts and figures, then that’s something we can address but I’m not sure that’s all it is.

Use past papers and mark schemes. The mark schemes are really helpful

Not yet but now I know which exam board it is I will def get one. Not sure about revision clinic at the school, they do them for the core subjects but idk about history, possibly no way to timetable it. Anyway it’s getting harder and harder to persuade him to make any extra effort for it or ask for help because he’s so down about it.

That is quite a gap!

I wonder if he's just not giving enough information, or not using the correct terminology for the information he is providing. It would be really useful to get hold of a copy of his most recent paper.

The Pearson's revision guides are good, as are their flash cards.
