The Judd School (Kent)

DS is in year 5 and aiming for Judd School. He's probably top of class but not necessarily top in Kent.
Those whose sons attend Judd could they please share their experiences of the school? Is it very competitive and do they get the help that they need?

TIA

Bump. Anyone?

Great school. Would choose again, no complaints. Wouldn’t say there was competitive atmosphere particularly. Some boys are exceptionally clever and very self motivated, but most will have strengths and weaknesses in different subjects.

Thanks so much. Can I ask what was the pastoral care like?

Pastoral care is well regarded at the school but I don’t think my son has needed it. Autistic children are particularly well catered for apparently. It’s a big school so you won’t hear much about your son unless there is a problem, but it’s easy to contact staff and the ethos seems kind.

Hi @Apusski , will it possible to PM with some queries as DS is due to start at the school in September and wanted to get a bit more information, if you don't mind please.

Apologies for piggy backing this thread. Are there any mums on here with children at the Judd. I have a question regards maths setting which is a concern. My son is able at maths and I have heard of a mum whose son was in top set and then dropped mid-year. I understand he chose his GCSE choices last year and was not permitted to do further maths. Is this a common occurrence and how may top sets do they run for maths- I understand the intake is usually around 180?
Thank you for insights

I have a son at Judd. They have around 192 in a year and 2 top sets and 4 middle sets (or something similar - they don't have bottom sets) from Y8. I've not heard about the further maths/additional maths but you're welcome to DM me with if you want to know how they're moved between the two sets

Lots of the boys at Judd are brilliant at maths, nearly a third (I think) do further maths as a twelfth GCSE. Not being in the very fast paced set that take Furter Maths is not a barrier to getting a 9 at GCSE or an A* at A Level in Maths, but each additional GCSE course taken obviously increases the workload and so can make it harder to achieve across the board.

Really good school. My ds has now left but talking to a current parent, he’s really impressed with it, and it’s great for his autistic son. Lots of support.

The school has just been ranked as one of the top ten in South East schools (can’t remember the position).

It is very competitive to get in, but not when you get there. The only thing I would say is that many pupils are used to being the top of their junior school, but at Judd may just be average. That can take a bit of getting used to.

That’s brilliant, we’ve put Judd down as our first choice. I’ve spoken to a few of the other mums with children there, and they’ve all said they’re thoroughly impressed with the school.

I believe Judd ranked fifth in the South East.
