You don't get a 'percentage' just the mark. Is the pass rate still 330? I think it's because each school chooses where to set the pass rate, and possibly because they age adjust the result so August born children aren't disadvantaged

The pass make for all schools is 334 so 285 is quite a long way off. As previous poster said you don't get a percentage. Sorry to hear your son didn't get through - it's a tough test so even just sitting it should be commended. And there are plenty of good schools in Trafford and Manchester.

What did people say in your earlier thread on this same question?

330 out of how many like 400 or 500 now its 334

The pass mark is 334. It's not out of anything as it's a standardised mark. My son got 396 as his top mark (for Stretford) but I'm not sure how high the marks are for other candidates. A mark of 285 is quite a way off the pass mark

The 11+ pass mark varies across the country depending on the requirement of the area/school, and they don’t all sit the same tests either. Not sure about Manchester but in our Southern county, it was the GL exam with 3 papers. When my DD sat the test last year the results letter said the pass mark varies each year, scores are standardised, taking into account age weighting and the papers had a range between 69 and 141 marks per paper – not percentages. The average score for each test was 100 and the minimum pass mark for that particular year was 290.

It’s not ‘out of’ anything. The top score is 423 this year but each score will be different depending on the school, despite it all being the same paper - Sale, for example, has a score about 7 above Alty. They see how everyone has done then score accordingly. No one is quite sure how it works- age is taken into account but it’s also possible that they weigh different sections of the test differently. A pass doesn’t guarantee a place either eg 388 passed Alty Girls this year but there are 208 places so they will be awarded according to distance; Alty Boys does it by ranking. 334 is the pass score so I’m afraid your child was quite a long way off. I hope they weren’t too disappointed and you find them another school they’ll love!

How do you know what the top score was this year - and I am presuming that was a score given for Stretford?

One persongot 423 for all the schools- only way that’s possible is if it was the top score

postitnot · 23/10/2024 17:54

All the schools in Trafford are good, I have one at grammar and one not and the schools are both excellent albeit in different ways.

In Kent, there were 3 papers (maths, English and reasoning), each score between 69 and 141. Therefore the highest possible mark one can get is 423.
