Delayed start and 11+

My eldest had a delayed school start, officially under the summer born regs, but really because she was badly injured at age 3 and needed extra time after that to be ready for school.
It seemed like the best choice at the time, but I didn't take into account the fact that we'd moved into a grammar school area. (By accident, only really looked at primaries when considering the move).
If anyone else had a DC with a delayed start (1 full year behind) then were they allowed to take the 11+ and go up to Secondary with their adopted year group? It's still a few years off, but trying to decided if it'd worth looking at tuition, or a waste of money as she won't even be allowed to try.
TIA

Have you looked at the pplying for grammar school info on the LA website (if you're in a grammar area) and at the admissions policies for the individual grammar schools? At the moment, the latest policy published will be for 2025 entry, but consultation documents showing intended changes for 2026 entry will have to be in the public domain by mid-Dec at the latest (and many will have them up by now).

I agree with @MarchingFrogs, I would first look up the admissions criteria of the schools you are considering and see if they explain their policy on over age applicants. It may give you more info about who makes the decision (the school, the LA or another organisation - probably whoever administers the entrance exam) and who to contact.

I would check with your council. My friends son has recently started school a year after he should have. He was a prem, summer baby and also got meningitis which affected his hearing. She called our council and they confirmed he would be able to sit the 11+ in his new year group, despite him actually being slightly over the age when it comes round. Obviously can’t say for sure until that comes around!

I used to work in admissions in a grammar area (caveat that things could have changed in the last two years). Back then, you could take the 11+ in your 'taught in' year, but the normal age standardisation would apply (so you'd be weighted against slightly more than other children in the year group, just as you would if you were the oldest compared to the youngest in your standard year group - but a bit more). When you actually applied to schools, you'd need to go through the 'request a place out of year group' process with each one, as you dud when you applied to primary, but they were generally saying yes, as it's not really in anyone's interest for a summer-born child to have to skip a year. There was talk of that 'yes' becoming a guaranteed right for summer-borns, but I don't know if that's happened yet.

Hi everyone, thanks for the replies. I didn't know the 11plus is weighted by age, so that is helpful to know. I never took it, so have no idea.
I will do as advised and start looking at individual schools
