Turing House Review

MomofSS · 17/10/2024 20:16

Hi moms

We visited Turing House this year for the open evening and found it to be lovely. Although the academics are not top and not bad either, but we loved the vibe. However I know that judgement should not be based on 1 day.. so I'm here to ask if any mums have kids going to Turing House (RIchmond Council) and if they would recommend it.. any pros and any cons?
It would definitely help make my decision easier when comparing it to other top schools

Thanks!

My daughter is there and we like it. It's only been in the permanent site a couple of years. They have done great to maintain momentum since they opened, even on temporary sites, and have always been oversubscribed as far as I remember. The teachers have always seemed nice, and my daughter has always been happy and had great friends.

Because of being a new school, and Covid, they've only had two years of published results. Their GCSE progress 8 was top of all the local schools in 2022, then a bit lower in 2023. I don't think the 2024 national figures are out yet - must be soon though - this says next update October 2024: https://explore-education-statistics.service.gov.uk/find-statistics/key-stage-4-performance

Oh, watch the admissions policy though - make sure you read it as some people don't realise there's a nodal point and get caught out.

My son went to THS and left recently - one of the earliest cohorts. He had a very positive experience. I think the head is excellent. AFAIK the results are very good too. My son did well there and the ethos was friendly and supportive.

Not the top? In 2023 they had the best results for GCSE in the borough. You cannot look only at one year but at the pattern in recent years.

Also, good grades often are not necessarly speaking about school efforts but about the cohort. It is much easier for a school to achieve amazing grade results if the children come from affluent catchment.
The absolutely amazing schools are the ones that have many children from less priviliged postcodes and have amazing results in the end- they made a lot of effort

GCSE 2024 Turing:
87 perc 4+
73 perc 5+
25 perc 7 +

This is really good as compares to most of the country

Every parent I heard from was speaking about Turing very highly. Even look at the google reviews.

if you live in South of Twickenham, in part of Teddington, Hampton Hill you will get in

@MomofSS if you scroll down this page there's a handy table which shows progress scores - I read it as Richmond upon Thames borough does very well nationally, and Turing does very well compared to the borough average: https://turinghouseschool.org.uk/equalities

Equalities and Accessibility Plans

Turing school is as Orlean school in the location where kids performed well at SATs. Progress 8 is a measure showing progress made between end of primary and GCSE. They made above 0.5 which is huge given that they have high starting point. Well above average

Meredusoleil · 19/10/2024 07:34

I have 2 dc at THS (Y11 and Y8).

Main positive is it's a small school (165 maximum per year group). Main negative is it's very boy heavy (approx. 65/35), but so are most of the other secondary schools in the borough due to the Waldegrave effect.

Also look at RTS if you are near the rugby stadium.

The girl:boy ratio thing can be a positive for getting onto sports teams etc.

I find it a very inclusive school, e.g. they do a big musical theatre performance every year (it'll be Bugsy Malone this year) and any child who wants to get involved will be able to. There is a big cast, the main parts are performed by different children each night, and the kids do all the backstage stuff - makeup, lighting, etc. It's marvellous.
