Which Barnet Primary Schools located within 3 miles of the Henrietta Barnett School have consistently sent their girls to HBS in the recent years?

The three mile criteria is about where parents live, not where the primary is, I believe.

Thanks SheilaFentiman
For a candidate that lives within 3 miles of HBS, are there any local Barnet Primary Schools that are known to send 2 or more girls to HBS consistently in the recent years?

If there's any school as such, it's more likely due to the school's size rather than its quality. State primary schools don’t prepare students for the 11+, and some parents move within a three-mile radius in Years 4 or 5, enrolling mid-year and relying on tutoring outside of school.

roses2 · 17/10/2024 14:54

The primary won't prep but they will be full of girls whos parents do prep and its worth a lot to be around likeminded people. I think that is what the OP is getting at.

don't think we can infer that 1-2 consistent enrollments mean a particular school is full of like-minded parents preparing for the 11+, especially within the catchment area.

It’s better to find like-minded parents through weekend tutoring centers or classes.

SchoolOpinion (no idea on validity) lists the following - since the entrance number is 104, I think, these schools must be sending 4/5 pupils each, if the data is correct.

Typically only 20-30 out of 104 in total come from 3 mile catchment in the past years - 4/5 per school is extremely unlikely.

HBS is a great school, but you can probably get a similar education if you just go private.

SheilaFentiman · 18/10/2024 10:56

“If you just go private”

Because finding £25k-£30k a year from post tax income is dead easy.

PreplexJ · 18/10/2024 11:36

Apart from the selective intake, I'm not sure if the education is "similar" in terms of teaching quality, facilities, and extracurricular offerings?

You are aware aren't you that the private schools that have comparable results, the girls have 3-4 hours homework a day and absolutely no time for a social life outside of school?

That's quite the sweeping accusation.

I have boys, they go to private secondary and even in 6th form, they are not getting 3-4h of homework a night.

Do you have a specific school in mind that has this as a policy?

TemuSpecialBuy · 18/10/2024 14:22

I didn’t realise about the 3 mile radius… every day is a school day!

looking at heat map they generally are offering outside this criteria so it’s not a blocker per se

I'm not aware, but maybe some of the private schools are like that.

Mistymorin · 18/10/2024 14:44

I live in Southgate, my neighbours 3 doors down daughter goes to HB. Definitely more than 3 miles away from the school. It's super selective, neighbours started tutoring their daughter from about the age of 8.

Girls who live within a 3mi radius of the school have preferences, along with LAC and, I think, girls who are eligible for pupil premium. The admissions process involves two rounds of exams. Only the top 300 scoring girls in the first exam are allowed to take the second exam. In the final rankings, girls who made the top 300 and are in the preferred categories (LAC, PP, 3mi radius) are ranked ahead of all the others, regardless of their score in the second exam. A girl in a preferred category who qualified for the second exam could turn in blank paper with just her name on it and she would be ranked ahead of a girl with a perfect paper who was not in a preferred category.

In case you're interested, from a FOI request, "Of the top 300 students in Entrance tests for 22-23, there are 33 who live within a 3-mile radius. Of those 14 were in the top 104 and would therefore have been successful even if they had lived further away."

Thanks @user149799568

Of the link I posted earlier, only one of the three primaries named was within 3 miles of HB. The other two were in Harrow so around 6 miles away.

Again, not sure how accurate the data is in the link so good to have the FOI info.

PreplexJ · 18/10/2024 15:53

@SheilaFentiman the llink you posted earlier does not show any school names only a heatmap, let alone how many students attended per school. There is FOI request shows the top 300 postcodes would suggest that the heatmap is inaccurate, if we assume the postcode is not far from the primary schools .

Edited

It does, but they don’t show up on mobile.

They are:
Roxbourne Primary School
St Mary’s C of E
Marlborough Primary School

OK, thanks. So, 2 in Harrow, and 1 school in the N3 catchment area.

From the FOI data, you can see that every year 2-3 students from whole N3 area enrolled in the past few years. So, the chances of all these girls coming from one N3 school are very low, given that there are near 10 primary schools in that area. That shows how inaccurate this data could be.

SheilaFentiman · 18/10/2024 16:36

@PreplexJ fair enough, I shall assume that site is a load of old wellies in future 😀

NW11 · 18/10/2024 16:56

Money is tight. Can't afford private school alas. Daughter lives in the catchment. Had wanted to identify a primary school in Barnet that has the best track record of sending pupils to HBS.

So is your DD aged 4 and applying for school now for the first time?

PreplexJ · 18/10/2024 17:20

OP I think you are splitting hairs

TemuSpecialBuy · 18/10/2024 18:45

+1 on Splitting hairs.

We are planning to sit and prob send dd to HBS when the time comes (shes 2 😅)

I got a place and my dh is academic so we set our targets accordingly.
We arent even looking at this re: primaries.

We just want a decent one where she'll be happy.
Intelligence, Parental support and some tutoring will do the job not a school with "form"
