South London grammars, ethnicity

Hello, my DS is in Year 5 so we're thinking about grammar school applications to St Olave's and Wilson's. We're a mixed race family: DS looks white but is actually half Asian (Pakistani Muslim origin). We're a broadly secular household, but celebrate Christmas rather than Eid. My Asian husband is concerned that the ethnic mix at Wilson's is majority British-Indian, with only a smattering of other ethnicities. From his experience, the grudge-match between India and Pakistan does have an unfortunate habit of breaking out in playgrounds (and also, sadly, some workplace environments). Do any Mumsnetters with kids at Wilsons have a view on this? I guess we're a bit concerned that having grown up in a diverse neighbourhood, and going to a fairly diverse primary school, DS is suddenly going to find himself in a bit of a mono-culture if he gets in.

If he secure palce in those schools, He should go there and represent the secular world. My DS is Indian -British and he doesn't even bother about nationalities, He would struggle same as yours if he happen to be in such environment. Be positive and hopeful that many DS are like ours. All the best

I would question your husband on whether those playground antics are from his experience, or what he has heard this about kids at schools nowadays. Basically times have moved on and so I would question him a bit more. I live in a ‘naice’ area with lots of Indians and Muslims and tbh, I hear rarely of this clashing between the two sides in the younger generations.

lol..where on earth do you, or your husband, work?! Although, I imagine that there could be some mild banter over a cricket match, I doubt it much more than that.

Relax it's not going to be much of an issue. My DCs go to schools (Bham) where the majority are of Pakistani heritage, but have friends of all ethnicities.
