Is there anywhere that publishes GCSE 7-9 %?

Just that. Is there anyway/anywhere to access that data?

I would like to look at it because I’m a little suspicious about my local school. It’s had a huge turn around recently and getting approx the same % of 5+ as the “in demand” school I’m also looking at. (It used to be about 30% less but has increased every year for the last 3 years).

However, I’m slightly dubious and think they might be pushing for headline figure passes rather than for the best grades. I know the “in demand” school does get a decent number of kids achieving 7-9 (not every grade but lots can access and achieve those grades in a few subjects). I would like to see whether the local school is getting a similar % to confirm my suspicions because they have a low progress score for previous high attainers. Their low prior attainers are above average, middle are average and high are below average. The “in-demand” school has average for all prior attainers.

It’s not published. You can infer something if you look at compare schools DfE website and progress of high prior attainers. You could ask the school, they may refuse to share…

Elizo · 10/10/2024 20:07

Sorry you have already done that. Apparently a 6/7 is an average grade for an HPA so if they are below average probably not that many 8s or 9s

Sounds like you've drawn the right conclusions from the data available to you.

chickenpieandchips · 10/10/2024 20:18

Schools will publish whatever data makes them look good. If it's grade 5+, rather than 7-9 they will go with that. If they had a comparable 7-9 they would be letting you know.

You can dig around on here but you may not get to the level you want www.gov.uk/school-performance-tables

SunsetGirl · 10/10/2024 21:58

We'd certainly provide that to someone who asked!

NeedSleepLotsOfSleep · 11/10/2024 16:47

Thanks all.
Ill take the advice and just ask them.

Look at which unis their leavers go to. It helps.

TickingAlongNicely · 11/10/2024 16:52

The government website splits down attainment and progress into low, medium and high achievers... plus what percentage of the school falls in each criteria. Not the exact data you are looking for, but might help?

NeedSleepLotsOfSleep · 11/10/2024 17:21

I did have a look at the breakdown of low, middle and high attainers and their progress scores. That’s what initially raised my suspicions about the local school pitching for the precious grade 5’s and potentially ignore in the rest. That’s what’s started me down this path.

I have no idea what my DC will end up with at GCSE and I’m not one for looking too much into results. I do draw the line at schools which are pushing certain groups to get an increased headline figure and ignoring/not putting much attention intro the rest because they know they will get gilder grade 5’a regardless. I would like a schools to be putting effort into all the kids regardless of what grades they might get.

The final figures for Summer 2024 exams are not out until the 24th October - the government needs to wait until all requested reviews of marking are in, in case you want to see the most recent High, Middle, Low figures. (I do agree that schools should be trying to get the best out of all their students!)

NeedSleepLotsOfSleep · 11/10/2024 17:49

@SunsetGirl thank you! That good to know.

I’ve been looking into this too as I have a high attainer. Most of the schools by us have good progress scores e.g .5+, but the middle attainers get .7 and the high attainers .1.

Hercisback1 · 11/10/2024 19:13

In fairness, progress 8 mostly ensures schools are pushing all students. Every progress grade is equal.

You can also look at the progress made by the three different groups- low, middle and high attainers. Most schools are great at pushing the middle attainers but I haven’t seen a comprehensive school by us that do a good job with the high attainers. This is our local school. Much more progress by the middle cohort.
