Would love to hear thoughts on the above schools. Will sit for both of them. Currently favourite is RGS but wowed by Trinity today! My son is a good all rounder really, very bright and loves sports. He plays in a team at football and cricket. Not interested in music or drama at the moment. Loves art, science, English, maths. Developing a real interest in philosophy, classics, history! He's pretty popular at school (state) but takes a while to come out of his shell. He loves learning but also loves having fun. For both we'd have to get a bus, we're in the middle. One plus for RGS I can see is the range of after school activities and probably social that comes with it whereas Trinity seems to be at lunch and kids just go home after. Also Trinity kids from much wider area so perhaps less easy for the social life?

There are lots of sports clubs after school - buses don’t leave u til 5.30 deliberately so the boys can attend

my son is in y7, did jbugs last year and loves it. Literally having the time of his life. Came from state school and no issues. Very unfussy school, the open day vibe is very reflective of the school. Only niggle is late notice of sports fixtures which can be all over the place. And the change in school lunches has not been the best vfm but these are small things really.

academically it’s really broad and engaging. Boys can be musical and sporty and arty and smart - they really don’t pigeon hole them.

I would start by not calling Reigate Grammar RGS - to most people that means Royal Grammar School Guildford. (The Newcastle one is far enough away not to be confused.)

Sorry I can't answer as my knowledge is out of date.

Trinity does a wide range of clubs at lunchtime and after school - and before school too! Ask them to send you schedule for a “sample day” of clubs - or if you DM me I’ll get DS to take a screenshot and will send it. DS has done after school activities 4 days a week throughout his 6 years at the school, plus most lunchtimes, and 1 before school. It’s an amazing school.

RGS absolutely means Reigate Grammar School around here unless you happen to live within 3 miles of Guildford! 😂

Academically they are probably similar.
Trinity will probably be a bit more S.London and Kent, with RGS more Surrey /Sussex based in terms of catchment.

The extra-curric IS very strong at RGS, both at lunchtime and after school. Strong focus on things like Model United Nations, Maths Olympiad and I believe they've just invested in an exciting new computer science esports facility!

We have offers from both of these schools, if anyone is in the same boat or could shed some more light we'd really appreciate it!

Wadwadwadwadwad · 16/02/2025 07:37

Dd is heading to RGS in September from one of the feeder preps.

The obvious difference is how do you feel about Coed vs all boys?

All things being equal, I prefer single sex for girls.

But what made us decide to accept the early offer was the very flexible GCSE schedule at RGS vs other local schools. She has quite a spiky academic profile. So many schools make them take a language, a humanities or RE - all things she has less interest in. She is likely to fill her gcse schedule with arts and extra science.

Just looked at the Trinity website and they are the same (require a humanity and language)

Having said that RGS also offer the same languages as Trinity (plus Latin) so you could still fill your boots on those if that is your interest.

Good luck with your decision making!

We also got offers from both! Currently veering towards Reigate as co-ed (though Trinity may well be soon anyway) but will re visit them both. Reigate marginally better location wise for us too.

@Wadwadwadwadwad Interesting post. Can I ask, what are the academics like at the feeders? Also, do they prepare children well for 11+ if you want to apply to a top school outside of the area (e.g. in London)?
As someone who also sees the benefits of single-sex, may I ask why you did not opt for it if that was your preference? Are there any good single-sex schools that were on your list of possibles? I'd love to hear your thoughts as we'll be going through the process soon.

@Inquiringmum

The academics at the feeders are good but different.

Reigate St Mary’s is the junior part of RGS. So aound 80 per cent of the kids will move onto RGS. The 11 plus prep is limited. Very few families who go there would actively choose an alternative secondary. You make a decision that RGS is the target when you go there. The kids who don’t move on to RGS are mostly the ones who are not suitable for some reason.

Chinthurst and Micklefield provide good 11 plus prep. Only around 50 per cent of children move onto RGS. Some of the children who are offered RGS will turn it down for a variety of reasons. They then support applications to other schools fully.

Both schools mostly feed into local schools though, e.g. Dunottar, Epsom College, Caterham, St John’s, Worth, Box Hill, Ardingly, Croydon schools. Given the location, these are the schools that make sense commute wise for the families that attend.

Single sex is just one factor. Ultimately things like shorter commute, non-religious ethos, flexible curriculum, sports options and extra-curricular focus outweighed that for the child I have.

For us the single sex options that were a possibility were Woldingham, St Theresa’s Guildford High, Sutton High or Croydon High. Some of those commutes would have been pretty hideous though.

RGS would be my choice on location, not a fan of Croydon (even if coaching in /out). Although with Trinity, I like the extra curricular being in lunch or morning before lessons, we have that at CLFS and works well for us as children have downtime after school before doing homework, etc. We viewed RGS and considered it's feeder prep Chinthurst also, but we decided against as grounds / sports grounds/ general vibe suited us better at CLFS. Along with the availability to sit the 7 plus and it's all the way through then.

We use to live across from RGS and we have many friends with children that are happy there.
