Hi, just a couple of questions for those who's children have been through the 11+ exam and passed. Or any teaches etc.
Is it much different from the work they do in year 6?

My daughter has always worked above her age range. However, for many reasons we have not long started studying for the 11+ exam (just papers at home).
Do you know of anyone who has passed without months or years or revision beforehand?
As I say she is very capable and the practice tests we have done so far she has gotten 99% on each one.

Anyway, my main question is it much harder that year 6/SATS?
I'm starting to worry now (I have obvs hidden this from DD).

Thank you in advance.

Hi OP. My son has just started Year 7 at a grammar school in Kent. The transition from a state primary to a super-selective grammar has been a big leap, but he’s thriving. He’s incredibly happy in lessons, and it’s been great for him to be surrounded by peers who share his academic interests. The range of extracurricular activities is amazing—they offer tons of clubs every lunchtime, plus after school options, so students can really choose how much or how little they want to get involved.

If your daughter enjoys being challenged and thrives in a busy, dynamic environment, she will love life at a grammar school. Be aware though that it is intense, and the pace might not suit every child.

Many people don't admit to using a tutor, but they do on the quiet. I think it depends how much you want your offspring to go to a grammar school. They suit the more academic kids but aren't for everyone. Tutoring is usually essential to get through the highly competitive exams like the ones in my area, simply because of the difficulty and speed of the questions. Some tuition centres are just giving the kids endless papers ( which you can do yourself) but a decent tutor will actually teach the skills, so worth asking around. Good luck with it.

Some is similar but more in depth than the early Year 6 work they will be doing. My son did about 6 weeks of practice 6 hours with a tutor and some with me and passed. He was GD across all areas. Hth

It highly depends on the area and how selective your chosen schools are. We had a shock at 10+ and then started private tutoring in year 5. We wanted highly selective schools and being bright, top set, is not enough, we discovered children are heavily tutored for years. Most kids in prep schools have a private tutor at home, or parents tutor kids at home! DS is in state school and a few very bright kids have not passed 11+ exams due to lack of preparation, not abilities. Kids need to speed through maths tests and many are not able to finish them, the right tutor will teach time saving techniques that save minutes of workings. I am happy to share our tutors details with anyone interested, lessons are online and they have proven track record of success
