Time to apply! House sale going through! Help!

We have rented our current home for 5 years which is over the road from the secondary school my daughter wishes to go to.
We are in the process of buying our first home ( been going on since March), not exchanged or completed yet which is 2.1 mile walk from the school.
I will be applying from my current address unless we move before application date.
If the sale goes through we will be out of this house between the application and offer date.
Where does this leave me?
Is it the address used on application?
I’m not concerned of being deceitful as we are moving away from preferred school not closer like some people do. However I’m gutted at the poor timing as my little girl really wants to go there.
Hope this makes sense.
First time posting.

There may be a window of a few weeks during which you can update the address and the application still be considered as "on time"

I guess what I’m trying to ask is- Is it a case of address at time of application? As nobody can see into the future or if she gets a place at the school and we have moved will the school withdraw the offer?

As far as I remember it is the address at the time of application so if you end up moving out of catchment it doesn't count

CleopatrasBeautifulNose · 02/09/2024 22:17

Agreed, it's your address at the time of application.
A horse sale can fall through, you don't have a crystal ball.
Once your address has changed you update your details then.

Thank you everyone. I have been reading the secondary admissions policy in detail for my local area. I find some of the information contradicting but could be how I’m reading it.
It has a section on house moves.
they advise to apply from current address initially in case the house move falls through. (Common sense)
It then says you should update your address, but if this is after a certain date, then that is only for correspondence purposes not for use of the application.
It also says any house moves that take place between the closing date of applications and the end of the first school term may be investigated.
It says when you are offered a place you have to provide evidence to the school that you lived at the address with the child at the time of application.
I will be able to provide that evidence as I will be living at this house during the application window.
I’m probably really overthinking it, but I’m so worried about moving probably right after application.

You can always email your admissions office at the council and check your understanding. We ended up moving on application deadline day, and ours were really helpful for me when I was checking exactly what I needed to do when (they were also very helpful at finding us a primary school at the same time when everywhere was full!).

I hope the timings work out well for you.

The bit about investigating people who move between applying and the end of the first term is probably looking for those who are playing the system. Some people have tried moving temporarily into the catchment of a popular school, moving back again once the child has started. If you've been there 5 years, I don't think you need to worry.

At my children’s school, once you get offered the place in March you have to provide current council tax bill and 2 other up to date proof of addresses. So if you have moved before March the place will be withdrawn. Is the school an academy, if so they will have their own admissions policy, if not check with the council.

It’s not solely about address at time of application. As others have said, it’s also about when you move and whether that’s within the window for using your new address for admissions purposes.

You could put in a call to the admissions team at the council, I've always found them really helpful to talk through stuff like this (two different authorities). 👍
