GCSE Mocks - when

Hello

is the timing of mocks down to individual schools or does everyone do at same time?

when do they usually happen?

also do they usually follow same format as real exams?

😊

It will depend on the school

TeenToTwenties · 26/08/2024 14:53

Very much depends on the school.
Some do November, some January, some March, some April.
Some do a full set of exams for each, some just do 1 exam for each.
Some do second mocks in some subjects.
Most probably use last years exams for mocks at some point as they are not mean to be in the public domain, but they don't have to.

It depends on the school. My son has them when he goes back in September and I assume another round in spring. My daughters had them in January and the school I teach at has two rounds: late November and February

They are done in the Sports Hall just like real exams.

SoupDragon · 26/08/2024 15:05

Everything, from timing to location, depends on the school. I think they are generally the same set up as the real exams would be otherwise they aren't good practice or a good indicator of performance for the real exams.

depends on school. DC has one set early November, presume a second in Spring term.

shams05 · 26/08/2024 15:15

Depends on each school. DD had them in November and again in January.
Both Ds had three sets, November, January and just before Easter holidays. Worked well for eldest Ds who was COVID cohort as he did really well in all mocks so estimated grades were high.
Younger ds was burned out by mock 3 and I really believe this effected his GCSE final performance.

I am an exam invigilator and the school I work in has mocks at the end of November and then again in March. Both sets are under full exam conditions: sports hall, external invigilators and for maths and English they have a full set of
papers, but for other subjects perhaps one paper in the November and a different paper in the March.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 26/08/2024 16:52

Our school only do one set of mocks and they’re after February half term. Sat in proper exam conditions

NeverDropYourMooncup · 26/08/2024 16:56

It's not a year to plan holidays, if that's what you're thinking of - we've had them in November, December, January, February and March over the last couple of years; not all in the one year, but there was a second set one year dropped in at the last moment, having only planned one set because they were concerned about performance/exams anxiety affecting the results from the first.

ThisPerkySloth · 27/08/2024 08:17

@NeverDropYourMooncup lol absolutely no plan making going on here other than how to make things etc as easy and stress free as possible so DC have their best chance. Ultimately it’s up to them.🤞

Thank you all for the responses - I will therefore ask the school - not always forthcoming early enough! So will depend on school and in some cases more than one mock and will be under exam conditions.

DS had end of year 10 exams were held in the hall under exam conditions just before year 11 did their real exams.

i will definitely keep an eye out on risk of burnout. I think this happened to me many many moons ago just before A levels and no one noticed. 😣

😊
