Maths A level without GCSE further maths?

My DSs GCSE results are pending & he has already picked his A levels which include maths PE and Geography. He doesn't know what he wants to do degree wise yet however I feel these would keep his options open.

Since sitting GCSE maths he's doubting the Maths A level choice without further maths. His teacher said he will do further maths GCSE in first term & feels he is capable but DS is unsure if he is. Any advice?

OP, I don't think sixth forms worry about students needing GCSE Further Maths to go on to A level, particularly if they're predicted and get good grades at GCSE.

DS1 applied to sixth forms to study Maths and Further Maths at A level without GCSE FM, and got offers from all of them with predicted 9s in Maths and Triple Science. All wanted 7 to study Maths and 8 to (also) do Further Maths at A level He got a 9. Not doing GCSE FM wasn't an issue. GCSE Further Maths was offered at his school but it was after school, and I think at the beginning of year 10 DS1 and his friends were still dealing with settling back in after lockdowns and long periods of online lessons from home and other disruptions in years 8 (2020) and 9 (early 2021).

At A level, Further Maths is normally taken in addition to 3 other A levels, and like @CurioustoKnow1's DS, my son and his FM classmates took the Maths A level this year and will do FM next year. It's normal there for students to do 4 subjects in year 12 and continue 3 in year 13 to A level, so the Maths & Further Maths group have double the lesson/study time in year 12 to get through the material in a bit less than a year.

DS1 also didn't do the bridging work last summer (he was dithering between two sixth form choices until the start of term), and I think his first round of "mocks" in January were a bit of a wake up call, but he really made up for it in getting down to prepare for his exams at that point - from only finishing half the exam in January (45% and a B) to A* in the real exam (and going from C to A in his other two mock subjects).

@crikeyisthatthetimez Good luck to your son for Thursday.

Apologies I was out for a while. We are in Northern Ireland hence the grade rather than number.
Thanks for all the feedback -quite a varied response. We will see what the maths GCSE result is & go from there.

@whoopsididitagain7 are you the OP (crikeyisthatthetimez)?

You must be using the mumsnet app rather than a browser, yes? On a browser it's no longer possible to use multiple usernames in a single thread (aka sock-puppeting). I read ages ago that it was still possible via the app, but thought they would have fixed it by now.

I'm sure it wasn't intentional - I'm just flagging in case you weren't aware. I change my username regularly, for privacy, so find the browser functionality useful - it means I don't have to consciously revert to old usernames when posting to old threads - it reverts automatically.
