Looking to move to the Bromley area and thinking about beat secondaries for boys. Any suggestions on schools please, so I can get an idea of areas to look at?

Langley boys or hayes (mixed). You'll need to live with about a mile of each. There is no overlap so need to choose.

Turmerictolly · 08/08/2024 13:53

Also St Olaves but it's a super selective grammar with competitive entry. One of the top state secondary schools in the Uk.

PettsWoodParadise · 08/08/2024 16:15

OP do you have a preference for single sex or co-ed, selective or non-selective? Faith or non-faith? Bromley has a huge variety of schools most of them good or outstanding.

Some of the schools like Ravens Wood (boys only, non-selective) have a fairly large catchment giving you a good choice of areas. St Olaves you can live anywhere in the country (in theory) but the entrance tests are tough. Chislehurst and Sidcup Grammar school in Bexley, a lot of those from Orpington and nearby areas go to for example if they pass the Bexley grammar test.

Bullers Wood Boys school (non-selective) in Chislehurst is fairly new but the girls equivalent has been going a long while and is popular and well thought of.

Thank you everyone for all this helpful info! I'm answer to the PP I don't really care whether co-ed or single sex, I definitely would prefer a non faith school and I'm not keen on grammar or selective really.

Forgot about Ravenswood, gets good feedback too. The only thing about Hayes is the head is off to Langley Girls (remaining exec head so will still be about). The deputy head is moving up so maybe worth watching.

PettsWoodParadise · 08/08/2024 17:59

Ravenswood, Bullers, Langley Park are all good non-selective boys schools. Hayes and Darrick Wood are good co-Eds

Probably avoid Coopers and Harris Orpington (there are better schools, might be good fit for some, but not many) Also Bishop Justus (faith)

dizzydizzydizzy · 08/08/2024 18:15

Charles Darwin in Biggin Hill is good. As PP said, avoid Harris Academy in Orpington.

Darrick Wood is also good but you need to live practically on the doorstep to get a place in y7.

The Ravensbourne School is another good option. We have a child there and are very pleased with their progress, it’s finally beginning to shed a very old reputation!

0hshutupshirley · 08/08/2024 18:52

@Sunflowers189 that's interesting. I read a review recently saying it was great but everyone I've spoken to in RL who knows the area has said avoid, avoid, avoid. So it's improved then? That's great to hear.

Most definitely. The school has strong leadership and fantastic pastoral care. It is not perfect but no school is. Our child is a high academic achieving student so not sure how it would be for a child in a set with lower attainment. Communication has been great too.. so far anyway.

anicecuppateaa · 08/08/2024 19:06

Depends where in the Bromley borough. If Beckenham/ West Wickham/ Hayes then Langley boys or Hayes, but the catchments for both are small. (Biased but I Iive here and think it’s a lovely area to raise dc).

mumwithallthebooks · 08/08/2024 19:28

Another vote here for Ravensbourne. All I hear from friends is how happy they are with it. It seems a totally different school to its old reputation.

Expectperspect · 01/01/2025 10:56

Any thoughts or experience with Ravens Wood school (boys)? Past years had around 2.6 mile radius intake, so quite diverse areas

Sunflowers189 · 01/01/2025 13:03

I think it depends on what you are looking for. Obviously, the big difference is that this is a single-sex school. In terms of results, Ravenswood has dipped in terms of the most recent progress 8, but all schools go through rocky patches. However, friends with children there are happy with it and what the school offers.

anicecuppateaa · 01/01/2025 13:09

Local friends are very happy with Ravens Wood. Next door neighbour is there (and our dc will go there if we don’t move as we are just outside of Langley and Hayes catchments…).

PettsWoodParadise · 01/01/2025 14:31

Friends have boys there and been happy with it. Bright boys may move on at sixth form. But many stay as they have a range of qualifications including A levels and BTecs.

Hi, I am looking to move to Bromely in June. Any suggestion of good secondary schools for boys in Bromley? Co-ed or single sex school advise will be very much appreciated!

PettsWoodParadise · 25/03/2025 20:16

If this is for an in-year place it will depend what schools have places really and where your son can get to. Bullers Boys, Hayes, Langley Park Boys are generally regarded as good schools.
If for application in the usual round for a Y7 place in the future then it will be based on the over-subscription criteria which is generally distance, or for the grammars passing the test and other admissions criteria . St Olaves, Chislehurst & Sidcup Grammar, Dartford Grammar, Tunbridge Wells Grammar School for Boys etc are all ones which boys from Bromley tend to attend.
Good luck with the move.

Mumworld · 25/03/2025 21:10

Thanks for the advise very helpful. Will probably look at Hayes and Bullers and keep fingers crossed they are not over subscribed.

Mumworld · 25/03/2025 21:20

Thanks for the advise!

Tragicmun · 25/03/2025 21:33

My nephews go to Ravenswood and the pastoral care has been superb for them during a very difficult time.
