How badly would my daughter get bullied for having a different accent?

we are moving from Canada and my daughter will be doing her final year of secondary school in Scotland. She told me her British friend told her she’ll most likely get bullied because of her Canadian accent. How true is this? Should we be worried? Would she have a hard time fitting in and making friends?

@clary

"Where does that leave English students at Sottish uni tho – do they have an unchallenging first year? And if a Scottish student goes to uni in England (tho why would they?) is that massively difficult?"

When I went to uni quite a lot of the English students were accepted for direct entry to 2nd year of our course. I don't know how widespread that was and if it's still the same but it was acknowledged that A level had greater depth than Higher and was sufficient to skip first year.

I went to a Scottish uni with A levels - I took (mostly) subjects I hadn't studied at school and so never found it easy. Was quite happy to have a 4th year before needing to get a job! (This was pre fees etc)

I haven't read the whole thread so I don't know if anyone has said that in Scotland your DD would have left school by now if she turns 18 in January. She might need to look at access courses for uni entry.

@Needanewname42

I dare you to post on scotsnet suggesting we should abandon our education system for the English one.

Go on. Dare you. 🍿

Some might well be for it given the mess the SNP has made with its ‘curriculum for excellence’ - a misnomer if ever there was one. Scotland has fallen below England in international tables (the ones we haven’t been withdrawn from when they started making the Scot Gov look bad). There have already been Scottish Parliament consultations on changing school qualifications/exams as the current Nat 5/Higher/AH system is so flawed and a feat of memory and learning target words to put in exam answers rather than knowledge of the subject. Don’t get me started on only doing 6 Nat 5s...

And then there is ASN (SEN). English parents might think EHCPs are bad. In Scotland we don’t have them and we don’t have anything in their place (CSPs don’t count). So there might be far fewer tribunal cases but that is because you can’t go to tribunal. And unlike England the local authorities cannot be fined for disability discrimination in Education.
