What is a pass for maths foundation gcse? And does passing foundation mean ‘you have maths gcse’?

thank you

A pass is grade 4.
Your certificate doesn't say whether you sat Foundation tier (grades 1-5), or Higher tier (grades 3-9).
You have to get a higher % to reach grade 4 on Foundation (around 65%?) than on Higher (around 25%?) but of course the questions are, on average, easier on Foundation.

Generally best to take the school's advice on which tier to sit.

If you look at this pdf and search for mathematics then it tells you how many marks you need to get in foudation or higher to get a grade 4.

Number of marks needed varies by board and exam series, but gives a general idea.

You are very unlikely to get a 3 in the higher tier - typically just if you miss a 4 by one mark. Otherwise you get a U. You need to be sure of getting a 5 to take the higher tier.

Yes. I think that these days schools tend to only enter for Higher if they think you have a plausible chance of a 6, and otherwise they play safe with Foundation.
