Experiences of Ibstock Place School

The school is close to where we live and ticks lots of boxes. We've been offered a place and we are in two minds. Local chit chat about negative experiences and lack of pastoral care is worrying. The school's setting is idyllic and the children seem to be happy, but some of the teachers we met when we visited seemed dead behind the eyes or just odd. Does anyone live locally and know the school or have children there who are doing well?

There’s another thread about Ibstock a bit lower down this board. I’ve been having the same concerns. My DC is Year 5 and our 11+ co-ordinator sort of wrinkled her nose when I suggested it. Not really sure why!

Sadly I would agree the chit chat is not unfounded despite some excellent teachers, and would agree that is the senior management that is the problem. Need to be dragged into the 21st century in terms of many things but primarily pastoral care (unless it's about discipline and sanctions, they have no problem with that side of it!). Their Senco provision is still poor too, they are trying to improve but there is much work to do shifting the fixed mindset from - again - the senior management. So I would be very wary if you have a child who might need support in this area. But it suits plenty of pupils very well and there are some fabulous teachers, though agree that some of the best have been driven out and been transparent with pupils about the reasons for this.

Our son recently started at the school and absolutely loves it. The structured approach to learning ensures that tasks are clearly defined and thoroughly checked, allowing students to understand expectations and stay on track with confidence.

He has felt very welcomed and integrated, and the student body seems to have a broad range of interests. The school doesn’t appear to be dominated by sports, making it a great fit for curious, creative, and slightly unconventional children. While the school encourages academic achievement, it also supports students who are motivated by more than just competition and results.

The selection of clubs is outstanding—not just the traditional ones, but also unique options like Dismantling, Design & Technology, and Dungeons & Dragons. The staff are incredibly enthusiastic and dedicated, and we couldn’t be happier to see our son thriving.

If there’s one thing I wish the school did more of, it would be organising additional activities in Richmond Park. I heard about a cross-country race, which sounded fantastic, but given the school’s stunning setting, a few more outdoor events like this would be a wonderful addition.
