Hi, does anyone know when /what exams are taken during Y10? Hubby wants to book holidays and I don’t want it to clash with revision.
thanks

Different schools have mocks at different times. I’d check with the school.

Sheelanogig · 14/07/2024 15:37

It depends on the school. Some schools do 1 or 2 GCSE's in Y10. Often English language. (In our locality)
Other schools no GCSE's are taken until Y11.

If no GCSE's in Y10 there is likely to be alot assessments during the year and possible mocks after the Y11's exams in June.

Are you thinking of taking holidays in term time?

redskydarknight · 14/07/2024 15:39

All of Year 10 will be introducing new material for GCSE or revising said material. Or working on coursework. As well as avoiding exams, you'd need to make sure (for example) that you didn't miss the mandatory geography field trip.

Taking a term time holiday at any point during the year is a really bad idea.

HcbSS · 14/07/2024 15:43

I would not be booking a holiday during Easter or May half term. Even if they don’t have external exams (depends on your school) they will have internal ones. And goes without saying, no holidays in term time.

Different schools will do year 10 exams at different times, but year 10 is the crucial year, really, don't take any holiday in term time this year.

Hatty65 · 14/07/2024 15:55

You just need to accept that your DC are in the middle of their GCSEs in Y10 and book a holiday in the school summer holidays. That's really your only choice.

TeenToTwenties · 14/07/2024 16:12

As others have said, you can see on this year's calendar when y10 mocks were, but even then the school make revisit.
You'll be reasonably safe for a week at Easter, or Oct/Feb half term.
Definitely not term time though!

clary · 14/07/2024 18:05

Yeh as others say - ask the school when mocks are as this varies.

Avoid a term-time holiday in year 10.

Probably OK with a holiday at October, Christmas or Feb half term but I personally might avoid Easter as mocks are likely to be in May or June.

SuziQuinto · 14/07/2024 18:08

It's not good to take them out of yr10.
However, if you're set on it, check the school calendar.
Oh, and as we've been saying on another thread - please don't expect the teachers to catch them up.

Testina · 14/07/2024 20:12

I’m intrigued why you’d ask that here and not just ask the school?
I’ve got a Y10 and at her sports club there’s been children missing training over the last 6 weeks because each of the schools (there about 5 they’re spread between) have mocks at different times.

We're in Wales, and DS did his English literature, Maths numeracy, triple science practicals, and papers worth 40% of his final physics, chemistry and biology grades in the summer of year 10. Those taking history also did papers worth 40% of their final grade.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 14/07/2024 21:56

They are not public exams, so individual schools decide when they happen.

I don't think (AFAIK anyway) that most of that is possible in England. GCSEs are no longer modular and you cannot take part of the paper in year 10 and part in year 11.

Obvs schools can get DC to sit full exams in year 10 but not many schools that I know take any GCSE exams in year 10 tbh, tho a friend's DD at a private school sat music GCSE in year 10 (no idea why you would do this). Sitting Eng lit in year 10 doesn't seem the best idea to me - so little time to get your head round so much content.

spiderlight · 15/07/2024 00:28

Yes, the English lit in y10 was a blooming nightmare! Having half the maths and a big chunk of his science grades under his belt turned out to be a godsend, though, as he was very unwell before and during the y11 exam period.
