Catchment area and distance to Altrincham grammar for Boys

Hi all I am moving to Sale for my son s education. We are hoping to target Altrincham Grmar for Boys in a few years for his 11+. Two houses we like are both about 3.2 moles and 3.5 miles away from the school.but all got the carvjwmtn area postcode.

My question is does it matter if we are over 3 miles away from the school ? Or do we need to be as close as possible to the Altrincham G for boys? Houses close to school are over budget for us. Worry if my son got a not very high score then others got the same score but live close to school will get priority ? So does distance to school applies as admission policy or as Long as we are in the priority catchment postcode then we are OK? I know the Altrincham G for girls got the distance policy.

Many thanks for your help.

My understanding is that distance is very unlikely to matter if you are in the catchment area. It would only matter if there was a tied mark for the last place available. However Alti boys tends to admit 30-50 out of catchment boys each year so all with a qualifying score within the catchment area get in.

Thank you so much for the confirmation. I am thinking too much. This is great to hear. The fact is he may not get the score required but I thought I'd better do my best ....I do find houses in Sale are better value than in Timperley...but will have to deal with the traffic ...Thanks again for responding, really appreciate it.

Assuming that Criteeion 5, OOC comes below in-catchment qualified applicants, then this year and for at least 2 years back, all IC applicants presumably got in.

The actual admissions policy must be published on the school's website.

However, you need to look out for changes to admissions policies for any school - the admissions policy for entry in the September is published in March of the preceding calendar year (so for e.g. this September, the policies were published in March 2024. If changes to the policy are being proposed, the consultation on these must take place for at least 6 weeks between October 1st and January 31st preceding that March (so between October 2023 and January 2024 for 2025 entry).
