Hi all,

DS just did full GCSE papers for mocks and it’s looking like a grade 6.,He only did a few hours revision. Wondering if it would be expected to go up a grade or ideally 2 with hard work in year 11. Any experiences to share?

Thanks

In general most students improve about a grade from y10 mocks to y11 results.

This hides quite a lot of variation though - some do not improve at all and some improve a lot.

If he works then he can definitely do better.

Thanks. Onwards and upwards.

My son improved 2 grades from his end of year 10 mocks to his February year 11mocks. He is now looking at grade 8 or 9 for his GCSEs. But this has taken hard work and putting in weekly revision since last summer. He has done this for every subject. Now is the time to start weekly revision if you want grades to improve.

Mine was on a 5/6 grade at this stage

7 for gcse

A for A level

they do mature quite a lot in sixth form. So I would say on a good trajectory?

Do you mean he did 3 full papers covering the full content of the course? In Y10.

If so, he could easily go up 2 grades in a year as I assume Y11 would be just revising and exam technique.

My children's school do only 2 papers and it's only based on what they have already covered (not the full course). So it's probably quite indicative of what they'll get, possibly going up a grade with hard work.

Thank you! Hope your DS gets what he is hoping for

Editing because I am getting confused. He said they did 2019 paper - they had 2 exams 90 mins each.

2 papers AQA higher maths.

Mine do edexcel - they have 2 calculator papers and 1 non calculator.

If they did the actual 2019 paper that means the whole syllabus was covered in the paper. You would be better off asking his school teachers because a mock can be very different depending on school. Ask if they have covered whole syllabus already and it will just be revision in Y11. Ask if they gave them an actual paper or adjusted the questions.

Can I ask how this revision was structured? My DS wants to do minimum over summer hols which I agree with because he needs a break (he did 1 GCSE this year and whole year felt pressured). He has agreed to do a few hours of maths and Spanish each week over summer when we are not away. Then he says he wants to work as hard as he can throughout year 11 and is keen to get best grades he can. With so many subjects (DS has ten), how did your DS organise revision throughout the year? They’ll also be getting a lot of homework and interventions so wondering how to help him to manage it. Thanks for any tips.

Are you sure it was 2? The full exam set is 3 papers.
He can definitely improve, because why wouldn’t he, with another year of learning / practice?
I think it’s quite individual what the improvement is though. A child putting in their all to get a 6 might have less easy” improvement that one who didn’t put in much effort.
Also, it depends what he got wrong vs what has been taught. Some schools teach the full syllabus in Y10 and Y11 is all revision. But others are still learning content.
With my Y10’s mocks, her lost marks were almost all on concepts they hadn’t covered yet - Circle Theorems were an example.
So - made up numbers - scoring 70% overall but 90% on content taught, is a really good indicator that she would improve her grade.
I would recommend to look at the details.

Elizo · 28/06/2024 11:02

Thanks all. So DS says they were 2019 actual GCSE papers, but as someone pointed out AQA has 3, so 2 of 3. When I see the actual papers I can be sure.

My focus on maths is because in most other subjects he has gone up two grades from year 9 or even more. Maths has plateaued off - he got a 6 end of year 9. Teacher did say he was coasting and I think without revision he has forgotten some of the content. Hopefully with some practice he can go up a grade or 2.

Appreciate input

This looks like a great site and am going to look at it with my DS. I love your DDs productivity! Very impressive!

Just to say, I spoke to teacher. They did full GCSE papers and he said some of the content my DS would not have seen or they had only touched on briefly. Interestingly he said DS not done badly, was broadly where they expected them to be, but some others has done better probably because they either had a tutor or had self studied the material. So reassuring and all being well he should hop up next year. Thanks to those who suggested I check the detail of what he did

Getting a 6 on full GCSE papers at the end of Year 10 is really impressive!

it should be more than possible to go up grades - as a minimum I'm sure they will go over the content they haven't really covered in more detail in class and hone tecnique.
