Applying to Buckinghamshire grammar schools when kids out of cohort

We have twins that started reception a month after their fifth birthday (30 July), ie we deferred a year and they are ‘out of cohort’. Parents are able to decide to do this where we live, Hertfordshire, and we did so for a number of reasons (health, educational, social).

We are in the process of moving to Buckinghamshire and intend to apply to grammar schools.

We have read the government, Bucks council and schools guidance in detail. We are trying to get some clarity on the process and assurance that they will not have to miss a year's school.

My questions are:
a) Does anyone know how the process at Bucks grammar schools works in practice for children that have been out of cohort? Eg do we have to apply in year 5, not year 6?

b) The tone of the national and local guidance (see links below) is somewhat different. Former seems to say that it isn't in the child's interest to miss a year's school but Bucks guidance is much more circumspect, saying that a range of factors will be taken into account, of which only one is the parents' views.

Does anyone know what kind of a case we need to make and the evidence we should provide? To me it is simply common sense that children shouldn't have to miss a year's school.

c) Has anyone had experience with this process in Bucks, successful or otherwise?

Thanks in advance!

Im not sure about the missing a year stuff, but the 11+ results are age standardised. So they would need to score higher than the rest of their cohort to pass. So Sep-Dec get docked points, and June-august (the younger ones) got points added. I am interested to know if yours would be included with the sep-dec lot or docked further. Fairness would be to dock furtheri guess based on same theory.

Age standardisation doesn’t involve docking marks.

As I understand it, age standardisation works on a sliding scale from Sept 1st to Aug 31st. A child with a Sept 1st birthday receives no extra fractions of a point, whereas the Aug 31st kid receives the maximum (whatever that may amount to in marks - I believe the degree of standardisation varies each year according to how the entire cohort perform in the exam).

An out of cohort child, assuming they can sit the exam at the start of year 6, would be treated like a Sept 1st child.

If I were you @northernerdownsouth1984 I would contact your target grammar (or grammars) and ask them what the procedure/policy is.

I’m in Essex and the exam board they use for 11+ covers out of cohort kids in their policy documents, so it’s worth looking for that too. AFAIK as long as I can submit a letter from the headteacher confirming that my out of cohort son has been out of cohort since Reception, there is no issue with him sitting the 11+ out of cohort.

Ah, that's interesting @Jellycats4life, I hadn't quite realised how it worked exactly.

Thanks @arethereanyleftatall . I have already contacted the grammars and they say simply to contact bucks. But bucks don’t take phone calls and seem unlikely to give much clarity, so was hoping for a bit more of the inside scoop from anyone who may have had out of cohort children in bucks.

im aware of the age standardisation point too but thanks.

Here’s the Bucks info. Not that difficult to find.

@northernerdownsouth1984 I don't know if your twins are sporty, but bear in mind that they won't be permitted to play representative sport out of year at secondary school. So they would end up playing with the year above, with people they may not know.

Not necessarily an issue, of course, just something you might not have considered…

Hi @northernerdownsouth1984 wondering if you managed to find a solution and how things worked out for you? I am considering deferring my child this year and this is one of the considerations. Thanks so much
