Hello, any thoughts on this school - moving from London in-year transfers. I've noted the catchment is very "mixed" but I like large schools and they seem to have a lot of options and new buildings. I've also noticed they offer a lot of BTECS so was wondering particularly how they might be able to support More Able Learners at GCSE?

If anyone has any recent experience it would be great to hear

It has not got better A level results better than those listed on here.
Some of us work in these schools so have to analyse the data every year.
The best A level results are Tapton, Silverdale, High Storrs and Notre Dame.

I’m in my 30s and have friends who went to Meadowhead in the 2000s. Absolutely fine.
I now work for one of the schools that’s been mentioned a few times on this thread and there is no way in hell I would send my DC to Meadowhead. I’m talking about now. Not 10 years ago.

It was Abbydale Girls before that!

It was, then shifted to join the boys when comprehensives came in, I think.

Mediwhead had a huge exodus of staff a few years ago, Loads came to us. It was not a happy school.

Yep, Russ Sharrock years. 1979 in this case.

I think I've tried everywhere mentioned as ok, even those less popular and outside SW including Handsworth Grange. It does change regularly but they were all full except Chaucer. "Critically oversubscribed" seems the right term for that year group anyway!

What I cannot get a sense of easily is which schools have most movement - I don't know the catchments well enough. A few people have mentioned this upthread. Do you mind if I PM you on this?

If you want to pm me about any of this, please do, also others who work in the schools mentioned. However, I think you've summed up the situation quite well.

Op people often home educate until a space in a decent school comes up.

I think you are right that happens - but its a terrible solution. How can kids make friends in a new area - I think mine would both get depressed.

Plus we are not teachers, both work full-time, and in no way can teach a KS3 / GCSE curriculum! Its a skilled job!

Please don't take this as a personal criticism - this thread has been really helpful for me - but I feel its a sad indictment of state education if many people are doing this!

Ironically, when I phoned the council this is what they suggested - teach them at home until places come up! No way should that be standard advice - think of the safeguarding risks if nothing else

I taught at one of those schools. There was movement in y8.

Peiple get divorced, go abroad, we used to have a few visiting university lecturers who’d go back to China and take their kids with them. I’m not sure that happens as much now though.

I think it’s appalling you can’t get a place. Go to appeal straight away.

I went to Meadowhead left in the 2000s. It must have deteriorated rapidly. I don't recognise any of the issues being discussed.

I know a few people that are happy with Forge Valley school (Stannington area of Sheffield). Their teens seem happy there. One of them is on the wait list for All Saints but has been on it a while.
