Dear all,

My son is in Year6 now but failed of 11+ examination so has to look for a secondary school with 12+/13+. Would anyone know which schools have 12+ examination or any ideas to get in a good school?

We live in Enfield(north London).

Best wishes,

Hi.
Are you talking about 11+ for grammar (ICHS?) or private? Assuming you're not happy with the school he's been allocated for September?

UnicornMamma · 13/06/2024 08:00

What exactly is 12/13+. I live in Kent and never heard of it.

Do you mean schools with their own entrance exam?

Baklavamama · 13/06/2024 08:03

A number of big private schools have year 9 (13+) entry - just look at the websites of schools near you. The good schools guide online will help you filter by distance etc .

If it’s grammar school you need to apply to go on waiting list but they would usually work through applicants who sat and passed the 11+ if any vacancies.

12+ entry is unusual but private schools do have occasional vacancies : they require exams still. You get to know the admissions officers at the schools you’re targeting.

St Albans School has 12+. You could look at Aldwickbury prep school in Harpenden for years 7 and 8 (though maybe that’s getting a bit far for you), as they have close links with SAS. But St Albans School is quite academic so it depends whether you feel your son had a bad day when he failed the 11+ or whether you need to look for something less academic.

If less academic you could try Aldenham (I don’t know about 12+ but they may have occasional in year places come up) and/or one of the north London preps (one of Edge Grove and Manor Lodge goes up to Y8 I think but I don’t remember which), with a view to them guiding you to an appropriate secondary.

BarqsHasBite · 13/06/2024 08:05

Sorry, I was assuming you meant private schools. If not, am not sure.

BarqsHasBite · 13/06/2024 08:16

Also, just to be clear: 12+ entry would involve an entrance exam, but it’s still for y8 entry. You just sit the exam a year earlier than those doing 13+ - you’d start at the same time as the 13+ group but you’d “lock in” your place a year or so earlier.

If he’s going to go to a state school then I think he’ll need to go to a comprehensive if he hasn’t passed the 11+.

You could see if there’s a place in year 8 but he’d have to pass any required entrance exam.

Yes. My son is going to a local school which is not good enough so I have to choose a private school for him.

the Dwight school might be worth considering - as an international school they'll probably accept into all year groups. Mill Hill might be another one worth contacting.
Another option for Y7-8 would be a prep school that continues to 13 e.g Keble Prep or St Aubyns, Once in the school, staff would be able to advise you on senior schools from 13+.

There is a school finder here:
https://www.isc.co.uk/schools/

FrumpNotOut · 13/06/2024 13:08

Not too far from you - Chigwell school has a limited number of places at 13+. Forest doesn't anymore, but worth contacting them to ask. Ditto bancrofts. I would look at the private schools that are commutable for your son and contact them /look at their website. The Times parent power league table has a lot of good information to help you narrow it down.

MigAndMog · 13/06/2024 14:31

I would look at all local schools to decide which are suitable for your child and then approach them to see if they have space for September. It's possible they will have space given that some parents will be put off/cancel their place due to the possible addition of VAT. It doesn't necessarily need a formal assessment date/exam - they may go on current school report, summer exam results or do their own informal assessment. Act quickly though as many will break up at the beginning of July.

They are the examination to study in private secondary schools. You can search online.

Would you be able to travel to Welwyn? How about Sherrardswood school for September?

Studyday · 13/06/2024 21:15

They are 12+ or 13+ instead of 11+, similar with 11+ but in later years.

So have you applied to and appealed for as many non-selective schools as you can in your area? Or is every single school apart from ?Latymer (not a feline in Hades' chance of Ilford County if you don't live in the Common Catchment Area for the Redbridge grammar schools) 'not good enough' for your DS?

Studyday · 13/06/2024 21:26

Yes.True.
