Can I use AI to help DD with maths in Y8?

Backstory is that although dd is doing OK she struggled in a school with a locum teacher for y7 and despite moving her, feels she never really caught up. She got 62% in her maths exam this term which isn't terrible but she would really like to get 70s. I know she is capable as she was in the very top of the middle before gradually slipping though Y7 before we moved her halfway through y8.

I am a single parent and already spending out on extra curricular bits she is committed to and simply can't afford a 1:1 or group tutor (also her peers are all at various levels so makes sharing tricky). I saw something on Instagram today with a post from a lady saying she was amazed at technology and how it was tutoring her son in Maths via AI!

Is this even possible? I have no idea how to get AI to do anything but if there's a well known site or maths function, is it possible to use it to tutor DD? Is it safe?

Have you considered a parents subscription to an online learning platform like mathletics or my maths?

Videos to support and self marking assessments.

AI has got maths wrong for year 4! Don’t rely on it to have the right answer: you need to check it. It happened so often I said to it ‘you’ve got the wrong answer it’s X’ and it’d say ‘yes you’re right. Apologies it’s X’ this was chatgpt

mathsAIoptions · 26/05/2024 23:36

No, I've not - is it a free subscription? I wasn't great at maths at school and am a bit worried I am not up to date with where to look.

Actually just looking at it and we did do MathSeeds when she was tiny! I just checked and it only goes to age 9. I'll investigate the Mathletics site further, thank you.

The methods/workings that AI teaches her and the ways that she’ll be taught at school will be very different, it won’t work .

Try the bbc bite size resources as well, everything she needs to know is on there and it's free.

StMarieforme · 26/05/2024 23:40

Corbett Maths online- free resources

northernstarsoutherncross · 26/05/2024 23:42

Try photomath app, which tutors through the steps. Also the excellent Khan Academy

mathsAIoptions · 26/05/2024 23:43

Yes @LaceyLou82 that is what worries me as DD is better at maths than I think I ever was, so checking it isn't going to be easy for me!

I did amaze myself by remembering how to measure the area of a trapezium the other day though (am fairly confident I've never used that hidden memory since the 90s!).

BBC bite size is really good and free!

Just put into chatgpt for example - make me a worksheet with 20 questions on the topic of multiplication for a year 7 pupil. With answers.
If it's too hard, ask it for easier questions etc.

Edited

I assume I have to specify what a Y7 pupil is though as it won't know UK curriculum?

I think perhaps I should stick with the established websites already out there as suggested, as I am worried it might end up confusing her more if I haven't checked the level or it has the incorrect answer.

Thank you all for your suggestions. Going to look at them with DD tomorrow and see which she thinks look good Flowers

Instead of year 7 you can say a 12 year old or a student working at a level 5. The more specific you are the better the response.
Honestly, teachers use AI to make their worksheets now so why not you?

DH uses ChatGPT for revision homework for DC. He's got a premium subscription from work so it's the latest model. I know he scans their school knowledge organisers and tests and then ask ChatGPT to generate test papers. It's pretty amazing stuff. Though you'll need to get good at asking questions the right way. It's like googling and we've all got quite good at it now.

SpringBunnies · 28/05/2024 17:36

He doesn't just ask about UK Year 7 cirriculum. I believe he always leads with the type of questions he want ChatGPT to generate more questions on.

Seneca learning is good for older kids - the basic part is free but then it starts to charge.
